The Tornado used in The Wizard of Oz was fake it was made out of muslim and a sock funnle along with wind machines and lots of dust. The House was a model that was droped from the top of the soundstage onto the dry ice floor and when it was editied into the final cut of the movie it looked like it was falling down.

The tornado isn’t real. While I’m not sure of how it was exactly done, it was made using a pair of panty hose!

It’s not real. They made it out of a type of fabric.

It sure looks real, and I don’t think they had the technology to "create" a real looking tornado in the 40′s.

I believe it is just a fake. They had to have something to help them make it!

the revised editons of the movie has all the extra footage in it…tells how the movie was made and stuff….might be in there

That tornado is most definately real. When Wizard of Oz was made they did not have the means to superimpose a created image onto scenery, much less make that scenery respond to the created image.
Hope that helps.

The whole movie is a true story

It’s a special effect. The special edition DVD has commentary from Angela Lansbury that explains how the scene was done.

The inspiration for how to design the cyclone for The Wizard of Oz came to Arnold Gillespie, who was in charge of special effects, from a wind sock like the ones they used to have in airports years ago.
In order to produce the illusion of a stormy sky dense clouds of yellowish-black smoke were used. Some of the "Prop Shop" men who assisted with this special effect were subjected to dangerous chemicals such as carbon and sulfur with little or no ventilation.
Many materials were used to create the cyclone for The Wizard of Oz. These included: a small car, muslin, rubber, music wire, fuller’s earth, compressed air, panels of glass, chunks of cotton, smoke, wind machines, dust, film projectors, and of course, many cameras and trick photography.

It’s hard to tell because It’s in black and white, but it looks real to me.

For years I thought that it was real footage until I saw the special edition DVD. Turns out that it was all special effects. Wow, way ahead of its time.

The tornado is not real, they made it out of some kind of material, though I don’t remember what.

It’s not real, I don’t think they had the techology at that time to get footage. I do know they used women’s stockings (pantyhose) to create the tornado.
