Where is the safest place to be from Tornadoes in the U.S.? How do people live in Tornadoe Proned Areas?

I know it sounds a little silly but I’m super afraid of getting caught in a super bad storm with no where to go. I can’t imagine living in some places, however, I really would like to move somewhere where it is relatively safe. Anyone survive a tornadoe?

Southeast Idaho. surrounded by Mountains. Tetons.
Never seen or heard of a damaging tornado.
