"What are some inexpensive.. nice place to rent a home in Oregon?">>>?
I am thinking about relocating.. I want to be in the suburbs or just outside of.. rural..but not too much. Safety is a huge concern. Where I live in Wisconsin the crime is very very low. The roads are not at all whatsoever congested. Which is why there are hardly any car accidents. I like that and will miss both. However.. I fell in love with the beauty of Oregon. Wisconsin has beauty also.. I would actually consider staying.. if there were more jobs and less brutal winters. There is a lot of land here.. but the tornado threats scare me. I want to buy land one day to build a home.. and with the tornados its hard to imagine here. Winters don’t allow you to go anywhere.. and you call out of work a lot. I am an Esthetician.. who works at a day spa. This is my career.. Will I be able to find work prior to coming there somehow? Or once there? I have a liscense. It would be a shame if I can’t .. but.. don’t want to find this out once there. I am paying for rent 650.00 a month for an apartment… only and I pay all utilities which brings that way.. way .. up. So.. Oregon seems to be more affordable.. with more beauty.. Here its all farm. No mountains.. A Lot of lakes.. but.. I miss the oceans .. light houses etc. How is the economy.. unemployment? Is there a whole sale grocery store. We have Woodmans here and everything is a few dollars less then at a regular priced one. The bakeries and pizza here are horrible. The snow never melts and the single digits.. are freeezing and you can’t get around much. Crime is low.. low low.. and I have to drive a far ways to get places and do things.. I do live in a small small town.. that has many shops .. but other then that. I can’t save here.. from driving far.. hibrinating all winter.. and going stretches when a job is hard to find. Please Help. Thanks

Oregon has a few cities and a lot of rural communities. Oregon always has a bad economy and high unemployment, so you should find the job first before you move if you have to work. There are more part-time jobs in Portland than full time, but it depends on your occupation too. The cost of living is lower in Oregon because the economy is more depressed than other western states. They have no sales tax but make up for that with high property and state income tax.
Eastern Oregon has harsh winter weather, southern Oregon is generally warmer than northern Oregon. I would compare Eugene to Madison, Wisconsin and Medford to Milwaukee, Wisconsin politically. I lived in Portland so I cannot speak about eastern Oregon which gets a lot of snow. There is a city called Bend which also is very wintery and not much culture. Portland winters are mild. It rains most of the time, but not as much as Seattle, which is a much larger city.
You can live on the coast an hour from Portland in towns like Cannon Beach and Seaside. These coastal towns depend on tourist trade. There are some smaller coastal towns in southern Oregon like Gold Beach and Brookings. The coast of oregon is rocky and beautiful although cold and windy except in summer.
Between the Ca-Ore border and Portland, you have a few towns with services. In Southern Oregon, Ashland is an interesting town near mountains where the well known Shakespeare Festival is held annually. There is Grants Pass and Medford, then a couple of hours from there is Roseburg, a nice old-fashioned looking town with a real downtown. The housing was cheaper there. There is a salmon fishery and wineries and the Umpqua River. The Umpqua ice cream and milk tastes better than major brands. North of there a few hours is Eugene where the Univ. of Oregon main campus is. There is another campus in Corvallis. It is a college town and a good size. It also has a nice airport. The capital is Salem which is 45 minutes from Portland. Portland is on the Wash-Or border. The Columbia River gorge area, an hour from Portland, is breathtaking to live near. I go past several rural towns off Hwy 5 when driving up to Portland like Central Point, Cottage Grove, Oakland, Eagle Point, Sweet Home, Lebanon. There are retired people who play a lot of golf in these towns as well as people from there.
I think you can find apartments for less than $650 in Portland so you should be able to get lower rents in the smaller towns, except for Ashland. The housing bust did not affect Oregon home prices and apartment rentals have not dropped precipitously as they have in other states. My sister lives in Portland and told me.
There is no longer a state health plan except maybe for children, like everywhere else, they have no money.
The big thing to be aware is that most of the West was and is still made up of people from other places.

I just did a project on the deschutes river basin. If you want scenery and recreation a the river, you go there. Fairly inexpensive area. Bend or Redmond, Oregon. BUT the price for living is going to increase in the next few years, so decide ASAP

I was in Pendleton Oregon once, it was a small nice town, they have a wal-mart some cute stores and shops etc…cost of living is low. There are beautiful mountains around and even indian reservations! Very cool, not much traffic or crime either. Hope this helps….how old are you? Maybe you could find a cool roomate to share expenses with? Split rent and utilities?

If you are looking in the Portland area you won’t find more than a studio apt. or a very run down apt. for $650
