Tornado Shelters
ever since i was 12 or 13, I have been terrified of tornadoes or any kind of severe thunderstorm. I am always checking the weather when i see the sky getting dark and i freak out so much, i keep thinking i’m having a heart attack… and it’s even worse because my parents are gone for almost 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. we have a small ( and in my opinion, an unsturdy) house in the suburbs and i have no plan for when a tornado does hit. Any ideas on where we could go for shelter?

I am afraid of storms also. I think because I was in a very bad storm as a kid where the winds were over 100mph. I somehow still think that every storm is going to be like this one, but they are not. But to answer your question, you should go to a place that has a basement because you want to underground if a tornado warning is really issued for your area. If you can’t get to a basement, you go to an interior room in your house away from windows and glass if possible. But don’t be afraid of all storms because most are just really noisy. A severe thunderstorm can have strong winds, but most are unlikey to do much damage other than to trees. Another good thing is that storm warnings are issued quickly and give people advance warning to seek shelter. Enjoy the weather for its variety and don’t fear storms because the weather is amazing when you think about it.

Always head for some type of underground shelter during tornadoes. When a tornado watch or warning is issued, head straight to the basement. Cover yourself with something large like a mattress to protect from flying debris. If a basement is not available in your house, head for a bathroom with a bathtub inside. Huddle in the bathtub and cover yourself with a mattress then also, to protect from flying debris. If you have enough time to head for a neighbors house with a basement, do so. Stay calm during the whole situation, panic can lead to premature decisions being made, and the decision made may cause more harm than good.
