Tornado Safety
I have wondered where I should go in case a tornado has come close to my home. I don’t know if I should either go in my bathroom or under my staircase. The problem is that for my bathroom, there is no windows inside of it but there is a refrigerator right above the bathroom. Staircase-There is a window directly in front of the stair-case and I know we are supposed to stay away from windows. Which is a better spot to stay safe for a tornado.. Thanks

A shelter below ground is in fact the safest option. If you have a basement or cellar, head there and cover yourself with something large like mattress to protect from flying debris. Even if the basement has windows, head there. The mattress will protect from glass. If a basement or cellar is not available, head to the bathroom. If it has a bathtub, huddle in there and cover yourself with something large like a mattress to protect from flying debris. The plumbing in the bathroom region will hold that area of the house down better than the rest. I wish you luck.

The best place to go is the lowest level of the house/building and into an interior room. An interior room is a room with no windows and doesn’t share any walls with the outside. A hallway, closet or bathroom are good places. A bathroom is excellent because of the pipes in the wall. Makes the wall sturdier.

My family always goes in the basement but if you don’t have a basement I don’t know.

In your case, it will be the bathroom. The water pipes will added extra protection. Rooms with windows you should avoid if possible.

The best thing to do is actually not what you listed, but to go into your basement or cellar and find cover. You should try to find a room near the center of the basement or cellar. If there isn’t really any center room, try to find a room that has a table or bench of some kind to hide under for protection. Another good tip is to cover yourself with blankets and pillows to protect yourself from flying debris if you were in a tornado.
But if I had to chose between the 2, I would probably chose the staircase with the window and put a few blankets over myself. The fridge could be a hazard.
