I live in southwestern Ontario which was battered by severe thunderstorms, great show put on by Mother Nature! Anyways, my area was upgraded from a tornado watch to a tornado warning. We didn’t bother running down to our basement only because there wasn’t any hail falling in our area. However, we were glued to our television for local weather reports/updates and all. Anyways, I know it’s much wiser to go to the basement because a tornado warning is only issued if one is imminent and/or spotted on the ground. So were we being stupid for ignoring the warning because there was no hail? We just figured hail needs to be present before a tornado might strike. So my question is….
HAVE TORNADOES EVER FORMED WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF HAIL OR DOES HAIL HAVE TO BE PRESENT?

Or is there no difference? I know that >90% of all tornadoes are F0 or F1, but Hurricane Irene is moving into my area,(southwestern CT) and a tornado watch has been issued. How powerful are these tornadoes compared with others?

••I guess when you get to where I am it’s pretty interesting how much life is so precious to you the first sign is when you wake up singing to the sounds of the annoying birds that sit on your ledge as if it were a branch but of course that is the only place they have to sing that is if the only tree you ever knew you cut down because the guy you kissed on that tree broke your heart and the second sign is when you enjoy the lemon scented smell of the air after a rain storm that has been reported as another tornado watch and as the weather man reports that you should pack up cans of tomato soup and a 120 watt flashlight because of the darkness

I’ve remembered that ever since the Atomic Age and the Cold War, we’ve had this EBS to keep us in touch with things in the event of disaster. But my cable carrier just lost it’s ability to broadcast because of a little "tornado watch weather" here in Wisconsin last night. I’m still getting "No Signal" ever since yesterday evening. So "If this had been a "REAL EMERGENCY", would there be any broadcast, or not? LOL;-)

I live in Kansas & we tend to have quite a bit of tornadoes. I’ve experienced many & I’ve even seen them form in my own backyard. I’ve seen homes destroyed by them & I’ve seen them rip a whole tree from my front yard. Of course, since I’ve experienced so many, tornado safety is second nature to me & I’m more calm than someone who’s less experienced. But I have one especial fear… I’m petrified that my family & I will be asleep while a tornado is nearby late at night. I’m a very heavy sleeper, as well as my brother, sister, & grandparents (I live with them). If those sirens went off, they just wouldn’t be loud enough to wake us all up. I’m so scared that one night, there will be a tornado & I’ll remain asleep. How do I get over this fear? Is there any way to assure my safety? We’re having very severe weather right now & we’re under tornado watch as I type this. Also, there’s been a series of tornadoes in Missouri the past few days, one of which hit Joplin & killed tons of people just yesterday, so you can see why I’m especially worried tonight…

I am under a tornado watch until 9pm. However looks like the line of storms from the front will be out of the area long before then. If the storms are gone, and I don’t see rain on the radar coming, can I still get a tornado? Why a tornado watch until 9pm?

I get REALLY freaked out of thunderstorms, tornadoes, and other severe weather. I’ve learned every single thing there is to know about them, and I even like watching videos, but when they happen, I get extreme panic attacks…Can anyone help?
I’ve tried everything I can. Last time there was a really bad storm and we had a tornado watch, I ran to the basement and started screaming "I wanna go home!"
Please help. It’s getting really annoying cuz my friends are starting to make fun of me for it…

I am 19 years old and I have a fiancee whom I have known since I was 15, and all day everyday I think of how I don’t look like other girls he liked and how I feel so inferior to them, he says he loves me and he treats me really good but I keep feeling like I am ugly and hideous all the time, like it would be OK if I were to die because it would be one less ugly person in the world, in fact tonight we have a tornado watch for where I am at and right now I hope one comes and wipes me out. on 7/22/10 all the local news channels said there was very high risk of severe t-storms. So in the morning it just start off as raining(I forgot to mention I live se Wisconsin) normal for where i live.Then it cleared up for about three hours,which I though it was going to be nice so I took a walk and rode my bike. Then I went inside.I then went to play the wii.Then my cousin came down an said there was a tornado warning for dodge county, which is above us so I didn’t worry that much.Then around it start to get dark I went up stairs to see why.it was greenish(which means hail).We went outside to watch the storm at first it was just a little windy.It just got winder and winder.At first we had a severe t-storm watch and flood warning,then it was upgrade to tornado watch and flash flood watch.A severe t-storm was issued,small hail began to fall and got very windy.Then tornado sirens went off your neighbors were outside and they came in.So we watch tmj4. then a tornado warning was issued for germeantown (right above us).Golf ball sized hail began to fall and there were down burst. there was a tornado warning for us.We got my cats cage her food and water bowl some of her toys and her food.We got some food and water and blankets my cell phone my parents money my computer.Then the siren went off, it was lighting like crazy.My cat was terrified,So we gave her cat calming pills.After the storm it was big mess

So, I have been nervous during bad weather ever since I was little. This tornado season in Minnesota though,seems to be out of control. Like everyday, there seems to be a tornado watch. So this season, I’ve been scared to death. During even cloudy weather, my heart beats fast. Tornado watches, I get a little shaky. Tornado warning, or looks really bad out, I’m petrified. How can I help this. I know all the safety precautions, I live in a stable house in the suburbs, and know the chances of my house being hit by a tornado. I am still scared to death. What can I do? I don’t want to go to a psychiatrist or anything like that, thanks!

I’m going to this concert this evening in downtown, in the city where the concert is taking place there is a lot of severe weather & severe thunderstorms happening right now. In fact the weather service has issued a tornado watch until 2am in the morning, it is 2:30pm right now and the show is in 5 hours from now. I’m concered with if they will do anything for safety if they ever issue a tornado warning. The concert is going to be filmed by professional people during the show performance. Would they do anything if the national weather service issues a tornado warning during the live taping or they would just ignore it ? I don’t want to be enjoying the concert with my girlfriend and then dieing because they didn’t do anything.

I don’t know why, but every time there is a tornado watch or something, I am absolutely on edge. The thought of being in a tornado terrifies me.
I live in northeast TN, but we get them here sometimes too. They aren’t nearly as common as tornado alley, but we still get plenty of watches and warnings and bad storms.

They freak me out!

I live in a small town near the twin cities in Minnesota. 2 years ago, i was at the park and the tornado sirens went off. The next town over got hit by a E-F 3 tornado. ever since that day occurred I’ve been super scared. If any of you know how to not be scared, do you know anything that you could do while in shelter, or things you can say to yourself to make it sound like it’s alright. Right now theirs a tornado watch and i don’t know what to do, because I wish that people could think of games or things to do while taking shelter. Ok, so here is the situation:
We had a tornado watch in the area here today and I went to check on my son. < I usually don’t do things like that because I know it would upset and confuse my child to see me come and go but not take him with me.>
Anyway, when I got there, there was no one in the building…that is except ONE small child (maybe 3 or not quite). They had evacuated the building for shelter but left this one child. Luckily, I was there and found her; scared but nonetheless found her. I am FURIOUS! There are so many things wrong with that! I am thinking that it could have been MY child and even though it isn’t it is SOMEONES baby and I would be worse that a tornado if that WAS my child. So I think the mother needs to know. Beyond that I am not sure what other actions to pursue. What do you think???
By the way my child was in a daycare/preschool and the manager does know…now. I think it should have been the manager’s job to do a final sweep and make sure the kids were all safely evacuated. Also, she was not hiding. She was on her assigned mat used for nap time. Just sitting there….all alone

Theres a tornado watch in minnesota and im scared because the storm is headed to my county. Friends tell me that tornadoes produce lightly since minnesota is up north but i dont know. Can someone explain to me about this. I get really nervous and jumpy when i hear thunderstorms.

Well, I would like to know, how to stay safe during a tornado.

There are windows in EVERY room (including the bathroom. D:), there are glass decorations everywhere. (including bedrooms, and hallway), and we only have two tables. Well, a counter a table.

There are 3 closets. And two mattresses.

The window, is right above the toilet, and the toilet is beside the bathtub.

If the area was under tornado watch, I could go to my friends house, but not every single time. (since she is going on vacation).

I dont have an emergency kit either.

Where would be a safe places to go?

I have no basement, and I live in an apartment.

We dont have any type of shelter either.
