Well, I have a opportunity to move from Mobile, Al to Oklahoma City. Now all of my friends that I have talked to have told me that they woudld choose hurricanes over the tornado. Because OKC is in Tornado Alley, and Mobile is on the Gulf Coast and get something from a hurricane almost every year. I’ve been threw a tornado, and I think that I would prefer the tornado’s to a hurricane. What would you choose between the two.

Our local meteorologist in Oklahoma City was pondering the possibility that tornado alley is migrating east to the midwest (places like Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky). They have had it bad the last couple of years, and we have had rather disappointing (if you’re a weather enthusiast) storm seasons here in Oklahoma those two years. What is the possibility that tornado alley could really be moving, or is it more likely that this is just a natural cycle?

im petrified of tornadoes, and ive told them im not moving anywhere in tornado alley, i told them i would move to Montana, but thats it. anywhere else would have to be in the western part of the U.S, but they want to move to Oklahoma now.
How can i tell them i refuse to move to Oklahoma?

ive told them i refuse, i will stay here with my grandparents. and im so scared of tornadoes that even saying the word tornado freaks me out.
how can i tell them im not going? im very scared of moving there.

Many maps of Tornado Alley show the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and parts of Iowa, Colorado, and South Dakota as the "official" area, but not Missouri.

(I have asked a similar question before, but I am unsatisfied with all of the answers)

I think I have lilasophobia (the fear of tornadoes and hurricanes). When ever it even gets cloudy my heart starts pumping. When it’s thundering I keep an eye outside. When there is a massive storm brewing up outside, I get tunnel vision, my heart beats, I sweat a bit, and just feel horrible. The weird thing is, most people with phobias can’t even watch video of the thing they fear. Me? I LOVE watching storm chaser videos. My god, watching a truck get stuck in a tornado intercept gets my blood pumping. I love it! However, if I am confronted with a real storm, I get terrified. I’m not young either, so my age can’t be an excuse. I live in Minnesota, and we get a lot of severe weather warnings, and watches, but I’m not aware of a tornado that has touched down near my area.

I don’t think I have any past experiences with tornadoes, so it can’t be post traumatic stress. I just don’t know what to do. I know how tornadoes form, I’ve done the research. I know all the safety precautions, and I can’t afford consoling, or the time to get together with some storm chasers. Nor can I move out of tornado alley. I wish I could install a tornado shelter, but I also can’t for money resons. Any advise to help naturally remedy my fears? Thanks!

Living in Shiloh, Illinois on the eastern edge of tornado alley. Last year we had one tornado hit my house.

So far this season we’ve had two within 20 miles of us in 2 weeks. Granted they aren’t Oklahoma house-flattening tornadoes but they’ve still all ripped the roofs off houses.

How often are tornadoes dropped in the US? It seems to be nearly every day or any time a decent storm rolls through.

i just had an analogy for the difference on liberals and conservatives on weather and security protection

republican are so prepared because we allow our selves to pay attention and learn from experiences and watch the news.

for instances in mid west and the heartland (tornado alley is mostly republicans and they are the strongest people in our country) and we are not afraid to pass on info for when the next disaster happen like the red cross (not saying they are but we know they are the best to prepare us right)…..
however some dems are smart enough to know….but

they just want to be political and blame the reps for spreading the fear, but they do the movies and tv show promoting the fear like war movies. and they get scared easy too

i’m a huge USA softball fan and at the end of july the world cup of softball is taking place in oklahoma city. i really want my parents to take me there for 3 or 4 days to go watch. i’ve never been to the midwest but i know oklahoma is in tornado alley. i’ve never experienced a tornado but i’m very scared of them. would the tornadoes in oklahoma be a reason of concern to not travel there?

My husband is fascinated with storms and tornadoes and we just recently moved to "Tornado Alley" so can anyone suggest a good book full of quality storm and tornado photography? I looked at a book by Prof. Bluestein called Tornado Alley but it was too technical, geared toward folks with meteorology degrees….

I want a big book with lots of full-color photographs. This would be the perfect gift for him. Thanks for your help!
By the way, if you also have a good video compilation or documentary to suggest for the amateur, please do! Tnx.

We live in southern Louisiana, but want to move somewhere else. Sick of the hurricanes, too many mosquitoes, not much of a winter, and too much humidity/heat. We have 6 outdoor cats that I’m hoping my parents will decide to take with us, but it’s not looking good for some of them cause they’re so comfortable roaming around here, I hardly ever see them except for when they come home to eat.
We also have a few small pets that aren’t a concern but our 5 giant dogs are. We’ve been living on 5 acres out in the country for the whole 19 years of my life, so the same amount of land, or more, is highly preferred. The dogs are used to 2 fenced in acres so I’d never settle for anything less than 3. Weather is a high priority, that’s one of the main reasons for leaving. My father has a very bad phobia over bad weather, and it’s getting much worse each year. So somewhere with alot of storms/tornadoes is definitly out. I know, looking for paradise right? I mean somewhere like Kansas would be out cause isn’t it tornado-alley? And with the present state of the economy, I have no clue where would be ok to move to. My mother needs to move somewhere that’s easy to actually find a good job, right now she works as a teller in Regions bank and would like to stay in the banking business.
I have no clue where to even begin trying to find out about any of this stuff, we don’t have the money to just drive around looking all over the country! How do you find out about the economy, weather, jobs, ect. How do people know where to move to?!
Anyway, any links, info, suggestions, advice is greatly appreciated.

How do you think Montana would be? I don’t know anything about it, but it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go.

There were about 37 tornadoes in OK alone and hail the size of baseballs throughout "Tornado Alley". Do you think that this is a sign that things are going to get worse or is this just a strange storm that will pass eventually?

We live right in the middle of tornado alley, and one has never hit, yet. Our house don’t have a basement or bathtub, just a shower stall in the bathroom, not glass shower though.
I drew a floor plan, since I was going to work out a safety drill with my children, so they know.

http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/Molafanspace/?action=view&current=1-1.png

By our floor plan, where do you think would be the safest place to be in our house? Or is it unsafe? Thanks for your input.
By the way we don’t live in the country, in a residential neighborhood.

I’ve moved to Oklahoma city in Oklahoma to stay for college at the university. My 16 story dorm building is about half a mile from the school and sometimes i walk to there and sometimes home at night, as you know Oklahoma is tornado alley state and we always get tornadic storms. It was raining and lightning very crazy last night and there was a tornado watch but thank god nothing formed out of the storms. In case there was a tornado warning at night in my area, how would i detect a tornado is on the ground ? Because sometimes i am in my dorm alone at night so i don’t know how to know if one is coming, should i check use my computer’s internet to detect a tornado ? Also, because sometimes i walk to fast food restaurants at night to get food so i want to know how i could detect if there’s a tornado so i could take cover before it’s too late. Can anyone please help me out ? I would like to know before i get killed by one of these storms.

and does he? Before you say "yes" to either you should know that the U.S. has a higher homicide rate than all of western Europe and most of Asia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_murder_rate#

and the same goes for the infant mortality rate

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_mortality_rate_(2005)

and as far as God’s wrath (natural disasters) is concerned the U.S. is one of the most dangerous places to live. The U.S. has more tornadoes than the rest of the world combined, the majority of these tornadoes occur in the midwest (bible belt) region. When you add California’s earthquakes, the south’s hurricanes and the largest and most active volcano on Earth (Mona Loa) it appears the United States in not only not blessed by God, but at the butt end of his wrath. Don’t you agree?
I should also note that the bible belt and tornado alley also encompass parts of the U.S. which are not part of the midwest region.
But my point is we live in a predominantly Christian country. Why is the predominantly atheist/agnostic Europe have fewer deaths per capita and less disasters?
John D, last I heard the religious and scientific communities were clashing. Maybe you’ve been under a rock for the past 30 years.
I keep seeing the term, "superpower". Well we weren’t always one and being a superpower isn’t necessarily a good thing either. It just shows that you have the ability to butt into others affairs when you don’t like the way they’re headed.

I am thinking about transfering to Oklahoma University next year and I was wondering what the weather conditions are like there? I know Oklahoma is in the path of "tornado alley" and curious if they get many? I remember when Oklahoma had that bad tornado back in 1999.
