Ok, I understand trees need to be removed sometimes for construction, safety, etc.

But most people go overboard. I think that during construction, people don’t do nearly a good enough job to replant. It horrifies me when acres of old growth forest is removed to plant tiny little fruit trees you see on parking lot isles.

Also, what’s up with people who have a phobia of trees falling and killing them. I mean…maybe if you live in a tornado alley, but if you leave in the Northeast, or Northwest or Colorado or something…I don’t see how there’s a high chance of a tree falling down and killing you.

People treat the most valuable asset of their property as junk, they think it’s annoying because it’s shade and leaves? really people?

I have lived on a very wooded lot with 50 foot tall oaks and spruces surrounding my house on all sides and only once in 10 years a branch fell off from a spruce and hit the side of my house…big deal. Honestly, my house is insured, so worst comes to worst, I will fix it. But i can never see myself cutting such a magnificent living thing down.

It’s sad. People cut down, and usually don’t replant – our country will look like desert with endless pavement and line-of-sight buildings in 30 years if this doesn’t stop.

yesterday’s news of tornadoes in Massachusetts shocked me, i didn’t think they were possible way out there, the area is more likely to be hit by hurricanes instead. its not in or anywhere near the "tornado alley" parts of the US. but as i read more, apparently Massachusetts does have tornadoes (historically).

makes me wonder, are tornadoes possible where i live, Los Angeles Metro area of California?
what about hurricanes? I learned in school that both tornadoes and hurricanes are impossible, but that was also when we had 9 planets around the sun.

I need to now whether they’re possible and if any has ever been recorded in my area. I want to know because I want to be prepared for them if they were to come. (our homes have no basements, violates earthquake codes)
well, could southern California, specially the areas around los angeles, have those conditions for tornado/hurricane happen?

Arguing that he doesn’t "like the federal agencies breathing down our neck," Paul argued against federal government insurance programs.

He said the federal government should not be going into debt to help in Natural Disasters;

if someone chooses to build a high-risk house on a beach and then loses that house in a storm, he said, it should not fall to the most risk-averse to pay for their decision.

Sounds Great to me!!!!

Don’t Depend on the Government if you live in tornado alley or in a Area that is Below Sea Level!!!!

We bought our first home last summer and it’s a one story slab with no basement. It’s also only about 1,200 square feet…2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and there really isn’t a room or usable space in the middle of the house with no windows that we could utilize during a tornado warning. I guess there is a closet, but it’s full of shelves and there wouldn’t be enough room for myself, my husband, our 18 month old and our pets. We live in Kansas, which is right along "tornado alley" and we experience several tornado warnings every season, although I’ve only seen 1 tornado in person after living here my whole life. But the deadly storms in the south have lit a fire under me and I want to establish some sort of plan like NOW but I don’t know what I could do or where we could go. It’s generally discouraged to travel during a tornado warning, but do you think in our case it would be a bad idea to find a business or building of some kind near us (there are several I have in mind that are mere blocks away from our house) to go to?

If You Live in Tornado Alley do you think you should have Tornado Insurance????

And if they don’t should they be bailed out by tax payer money when we are in debt????

ok this question may be long and i don’t want any rude, dumb comments please. well i live in tornado alley (nebraska, south sioux city) and my 16 years of living here there hasn’t been a tornado that struck the town. ( not in my 16 yrs of living here, im not sure before that. ) and i thought that we didn’t live in tornado alley so i didn’t worry about tornado’s until we heard the sirens and a tornado struck in a little town not far from where we live and ever since then ive become traumatized and im afraid that every severe thunderstorm can mean that a tornado can form. ive asked people if they think a tornado can hit our town and one person said no because there hasn’t been a tornado, i want to believe that but i get an uneasy feeling that maybe one day it will be our turn and i don’t feel prepared. the second person said yes that a tornado can hit our town and that sooner or later it will but i don’t want to believe it. are there any states that are in tornado alley that have never been hit by tornado’s or that just because they live in tornado alley doesn’t mean they have to get hit by tornado’s? and what disturbs me also is that people aren’t scared if a tornado hit our town and also my parents are divorced so im always worried about my mom because she doesn’t know if theres a tornado warning ( she doesn’t watch the weather news and i tried making her but shes stubborn so i have to keep informed and i think her basement is not good shelter but she probably wont leave the house for another shelter ) if u can help with some of these questions i asked and maybe calm me down a bit because ive become such a worrywart ever since i experienced this :/ thanks

The tornadoes that hit Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee yesterday probably killed over 200 people.

Most of those people probably didn’t have access to a secure, hurricane-resistant basement area. Research shows that when people can shelter in a basement, their survival rate is extremely high.

I live near Houston, and even though the swampy environment makes basements more difficult, I DO have one. And this isn’t even the heart of "tornado alley."

I don’t understand why it is legal to build residential or business structures in America without basements. We should know better by now.

Is it time to update the construction codes in states like Alabama? Or should we wait until another 200 people die in tornadoes?

I don’t know why, but every time there is a tornado watch or something, I am absolutely on edge. The thought of being in a tornado terrifies me.
I live in northeast TN, but we get them here sometimes too. They aren’t nearly as common as tornado alley, but we still get plenty of watches and warnings and bad storms.

They freak me out!

I think they should make houses in tornado alley that have indoor basements or outdoor basements, it would save lives for the citizens who live in it, and I think that paying for a basement is ridiculous. You shouldn’t have to pay for something for your safety, that’s what I think. Give me your opinions about this.
For those with the smart remarks I’m just a kid, I’m only 16 so um how can I pay for my own house and take care of my self I’m not even in college yet.. smh pity on you and um btw I don’t live in tornado.. I just thought it was a great idea.

I’ve just moved to oklahoma city in oklahoma where is mostly known as tornado alley, i didn’t want to move but i had to because of my job relocation. Since i’ve heard on television on the news back in 1999 about the deadliest may 3rd 1999 tornado outbreak in history, i never would want to move here if it wasn’t for my job. But does anything like that ever happen here often ? People said that tornadoes here in Oklahoma forms into the deadly F5 tornadoes that is about a mile wide in diameter. What are some ways i could make sure my wife & family is safe during one of these outbreaks if I’m away from home ? Also, how could i keep myself safe if i am on the 34th floor in an building with only express elevators ? The elevators don’t have stops between floors Lobby – 29th. I’m very curious about my family’s safety and mine’s in case if one of these tornado outbreaks occurs

Just wondering. I pretty much live in tornado alley, and it’s that magical time of year where I’m bombarded with thunderstorms; because of this, I frequently find myself unplugging all of my electronics. I’m asking three questions in one.

1) How well does a surge protector work in a thunderstorm?

2) Where can I find a surge protector?

3) Is it still a myth that unplugging your computer during a thunderstorm can help protect your electronics?

Thanks, your answers are always appreciated!

I’ve got a family of 4. Two adults and two young grade school kids. We own property in a small quiet town and have recently laid down cement foundation in hopes to build a one story home in the next 3-4 years.

Oh, if this helps? We enjoy spending time outdoors and would build a covered porch to the 5th wheel to add an "extra space."

We are currently renting a 70′s model non energy efficient small trailer home with little privacy that costs over 600 a month including the utilities.

This seems dumb! We would love to be on our property as we build because we love the neighbors three already and our kids would have more room to play anyhow without risk of damaging anything.

We would love to buy an affordable used 5th wheel and live there as we build to save money and gain privacy. We have already ran this idea past the ladies at city hall and it would be legal!

My concern, we do live in tornado alley. During the summer I worry about extreme weather and our town does not provide a tornado shelter. But at the same time the place we are renting isn’t that safe either.

Anyone else have experience living in a 5th wheel full time?

I just heard on the local news station, here in NC, that there is a possibility of a Tornado happening tomorrow near my town. Anyways, the weather man on the news station said something like a warm front meeting a cold front, which would make this tornado happen. I don’t even live in tornado alley. We get tornado’s here, but not like the one’s in the Midwest like Kansas and Oklahoma. What is awkward about this warning is the fact that it is pretty much in December and tornado’s don’t usually happen at this time of year. Also, when the local weather man made this announcement on the news, he even said it is way out of the ordinary for this to happen, and immediately after he said this, they immediately went to the sports segment of the news, making this situation more intense. How come North Carolina is getting a possible tornado warning for tomorrow in dang December? I don’t mean to be an alarmist, but something doesn’t sound right here. It seems the weather patterns have changed over the years.
