Hi! :) Ok, so I’m a spaz when it comes to tornadoes, and I was just curious how often does PA get severe tornadoes, and do they cause serious damage or even death? I fear them like nobody’s business and I always end up having my family and all my pets in the basement during a thunderstorm for fear that a tornado will happen…hahaha, i know, crazy. Just curious, thanks!

Help, I’m SO scared of tornadoes. Even if there’s a small thunderstorm, I just go crazy.
Okay, Okay. I’m 15. Truth.
Yeah, and I take medication and it doesn’t help. I talked to my doctor and told me to come back when it happens again. I told him but he just said, ‘relax’. I don’t understand- and
I know all the safety precautions and stuff but I just can’t get my mind of it!!!
Oh, and please please PLEASE don’t make any rude comments. Thanks for your help again!

In an attempt to be prepared for the upcoming storm season, Im looking to make a "storm" kit that has candles, flash lights, etc that can be grabbed at any given moment to taken to the basement with us (for Tornados) or in the dark in case of a "lights out" Thunderstorm.

What are some ideas of what I should keep in the Storm box?

serious/practical answers only, please :-)

I’m deathly afraid of tornadoes and thunderstorm’s. When I was 9 there was a tornado where i lived and the power went off, I kept on throwing up, because i was very scared. I threw up about 6 times that day. Now i’m deathly afraid of tornadoes. But i dunno how I got to be afraid of thunderstorm’s. i think it’s because it’s related to a tornado. Please help!

Just wondering. I pretty much live in tornado alley, and it’s that magical time of year where I’m bombarded with thunderstorms; because of this, I frequently find myself unplugging all of my electronics. I’m asking three questions in one.

1) How well does a surge protector work in a thunderstorm?

2) Where can I find a surge protector?

3) Is it still a myth that unplugging your computer during a thunderstorm can help protect your electronics?

Thanks, your answers are always appreciated!

Im 12 and I have a HUGE fear of thunderstorms. This all started when a tornado came through my school about a year and a half ago. If it’s a normal thunderstorm, then i’m fine, but if its severe…Just ughh. I hate them. And it just got worse after the tornado warning in my area that happened a few weeks ago. Like the thunder scares me and the hail (sometimes). I get my self so worked up about it, so it makes me think that a tornado is going to form, i hate them too. I search up info about thunderstorms and tornadoes all the time, thinking that if i get informed i will be less scared, but it just makes me more scared. o.o I get in alot of trouble with my parents because of this strange phobia. And like what i it happens during school? I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of my classmates! I want this fear to end! Any ideas on how to make it stop WITHOUT meds? Or going to the doctor? Please help!

Its raining in southern california, like HARD, like thunderstorm&tornado warnings haha, seriously I watched the news, anyways. What should I wear to school when its raining? I’m thinking of wearing black yoga pants,a white spaghetti strap tank, gray sweater, white scarf and gray uggs with a white purse&a necklace&bangles. does that sound cute? any other ideas? I love the rain, but IDK what to wear! haha, im 15&in high school, so I dress pretty "fashionable". Also I’m 5’2, if that makes a difference. I have pretty much everything you can think of for clothes, so you can name anything.

thanksssss (:

Let me try and give as much details as i can. I cant seem to get a answer from anyone yet and insurance people are backed up and cannot come to see the damage.

So a huge tree is 95% on my property and 5% on my back neighbors property. Its a nice healthy strong tree. Sunday a tornado touched down in North Jersey and cracked this tree in half. A small portion broke off completely and smashed my back neighbors patio. From what i understand, my neighbors insurance will cover that. Even that neighbor said they would.

Now here is where the tricky stuff comes in. The rest of the cracked tree is now hanging OVER that same neighbors house. It has not completely fallen and is being helf up my another smaller tree.

Its a hazard i guess since another storm can possibly make it go down. also a police officer said it has to come down because of the potential hazard. The police officer suggested i speak with the neighbor and possibly split the bill to take it down. I have spoken to the neighbor but did not suggest anything about my paying. I only asked if he had gotten tree companies for quotes and stuff. I even offered a tree company to use my yard if it helps with the removal since his is hard to get machinary into.

The neighbor has not straight out told me " you have to pay!" but it feels like he is trying to stick me with 100% of the bill. Basically we are on hold till our insurance peeps get back to us.

Sorry for the long explanation but i just wanted to throw everything i know thus far. Its now wednesday so 3 days have past and the tree is still hanging. does anyone know off hand do i have to pay for it or him? Or both of us? Im actually starting to get concerned that he has not removed the tree yet. If a tree was hanging over my house i would pay to get it out ASAP and handle the bill later IMO.
But he hasnt done anything yet. tomorrow it will thunderstorm and im getting worried. I dont want to be charged for negligence if something happens. would i be charged?

How rare are they? How can you tell the difference between a supercell and a regular thunderstorm besides tornadoes? Also how dangerous is storm chasing and spotting if you know what you’re doing? from a 1- 10 scale.

i don’t like the damage they do or the injuries they cause, but for some reason whenever there’s a tornado warning or there’s a tornado around, i get somewhat excited. or even if there’s a horrible thunderstorm out. i love horrible weather lol. anybody else?

In a recent thunderstorm, my town took matters into it’s own hands and issued its own tornado warning. (Which could only legally extend to city limits). This was because a police officer reported a funnel(which was only scud). They sounded the sirens and everyone took cover, only for the warning to be taken back minutes later. Now many people are mad at the town. Is this kind of thing allowed?

40mph is said to be F0 grade on the Fujita scale, but dust devils are said to reach speeds in excess of 60 mph. They’re said to never be counted as tornadoes(Twister, Fury on the Plains video) Tornadoes are said to have thunderstorm connections, but something I found online said a lot of twisters have formed w/ no sign of lightning, so what’s the difference b/n that & a fair weather type thermal? Tornadoes also don’t always have visible connections to parent clouds. What would you call a tornado that did meet all the profile characteristics, but only packed 35mph winds?

I understand that the Weather Service uses two types of alerts: Watches and Warnings.
Watch – conditions are favorable, and a tornado might happen today.
Warning – Seek shelter NOW!

15-20 years ago, a tornado warning meant "there’s a tornado on the ground, seek shelter NOW"
Today, it’s "there’s a thunderstorm spinning overhead. It might produce a tornado, but it often doesn’t".

To me, that shows a need for a third level of alert.

Watch – Don’t plan on spending the day outside.
(whatever the new term is) – Spinning thunderstorm in the area.
Warning – Seek shelter NOW! – Tornado on the ground.

we’ve got a tornado watch here and its the 1st one I remember
Last nite about 4 AM it started booming and crashing intensely and loudly but I just figured wow this is a good one (thunderstorm) and tryed to get back to sleep as best I could.
But today I find out we are under a tornado watch.
Should I be listening for something or leaving the radio on or what
When do I run for the cellar?

i live in north east iowa, and we our county is under a sever thunderstorm watch. the watch is covering almost all of our county. but there is also a tornado watch. and it is barley touching our county to the east. maybe a good 10miles of our county is under a tornado watch. while more then half is covered by a t storm watch. but they are broadcasting it as a full tornado watch. would the threat still be more toward sever things like hail and wind other then a tornado?
