I live in the midwest, Michigan to be exact – in a small suburb of Flint. We have been having odd weather lately – last night, a horrbile thunderstorm. The day before, scorching heat. The day before that – it was SUPER humid and windy! What the heck!
It’s not just us – it’s all of the midwest. 2 days ago in Milwaukee, WI there was a tornado warning. The next day, there was another one! In fact, there has been about 16 reported tornadoes in the midwest. Crazy! Anyone have any clue why this is happening? Anything is appreciated. :]
Are you sure it’s a coincidence that soooo many Tornadoes and flooding of the Mississippi River and Cedar Rapid, Iowa being underwater from flooding? The midwest is where Obama’s from.
… so is it possible Bush and McCain planted rain-making crops and caused the bad weather to get the people in the midwest mad at Obama and help the Republicans take the White House?
Also Bush could have planted the Tornadoes so Obama wouldn’t be able to campaign in the strong and help McCain catch up.
I live in the Midwest, and I have to live with tornadoes. I HATE tornadoes, especially when I dream about them.
When tornadoes invade my dreams, it usually means that something bad is about to happen in my life. This time, I dreamed that I was seeking shelter from a tornado, as there was a warning. But, when I go to a basement, it’s a top-notch basement, and the tornado never came. In fact, the sun was shining through the windows, the birds were singing, and nothing happened.
What does this mean? Does it mean that I’m worried about something, and I shouldn’t be?
BQ what kind of national disaster does your state have? i live in california and we have earthquakes, i think i would rather sit threw a tornado then an earthqauke so i might move to the midwest

Because of all of the national disasters….Katrina, the California fires, the Southern drought, tornadoes in the Midwest, companies are being formed that will charge a hefty fee and guarantee your evacuation before disasters can sweep you away, burn your house, or endanger your life.
With names like Helpjet or Special Clients Group, these companies will fly you out of harm’s way or, in case of fire, spray your home with retardant foam, even though your neighbor’s house may be going up in flames.
One such company is located in Pellston, MI, and will charge ,000, plus ,000 yearly. The question is, is it right to have the rich paying for rescue from disaster, while poor are stranded? Should affordable rescue be a right for every citizen? With our tax money funding FEMA, should these companies be denied licenses and all money be spent to improve rescue for all?
A tornado or an earthquake? i live in the midwest so i’ve been through tornadoes, but i was thinking about moving to California and i have heard that earthquakes are worse…
Doesn’t that state burn down every year? They should come to expect this. Just like people in the South East part of the US should expect hurricanes and those in the Midwest should expect tornados. It would be nice if society built structures and communities in such a way that natural disasters were not so much of a problem.
The house would not have to be fire proof. There are other methods to go about protecting your home. For example, if the forestes were gridded so that the fire would be stuck in "blocks" and not be able to spread continuously.
You could build a fireproof house fairly simeple and relatively cheap. Even if the house costs twice as much, it would still be cheaper than building it multiple times after it burns down. Use stone, brick, concrete, etc. and have "shutters" that are made of metal to keep windows from being subject to the heat. You could also build the home underground and not even worry about the fire. I am sure you would still want to leave any area there is a fire, since it will eat all the oxygen though.
Hurrican proof homes already exist. Take a look at Deltec homes. They are quite interesting.
I’m moving next summer from Albuquerque, NM to somewhere in Oklahoma City, and I was wondering if all houses have basements, since I’m moving from a relatively tornado free area to Tornado Alley. Also, do apartments in the Midwest have basements?

well i experienced a couple earthquakes the biggest being the 1989 san francisco, but after that they’ve been pretty small but always scary!

I was once told that every place has it’s downside. Alaska has earthquakes, california has fires, earthquakes, the midwest gets tornadoes, etc, etc.
What is the risk for Raleigh, NC? Is it inland enough not to have to worry about a huge hurricane? What about tornadoes, do they get them there? Any earthquakes?

I dont know anyone who has ever seen or heard about a tornado in Miami or other Florida cities (exept for the couple that got on tv, in 97 and 2000 i believe). I know there was one also in 2007 in mid florida. Florida is said to be the #1 state for tornadoes per square mile, yet no one has seen one or knows that fact. I mean i see some crazy clouds with potential over Miami all the time, that are much more dangerous looking than the ones in tornado videos from Oklahoma and such. So what gives?
Yes I know Florida is #1 for lightning, I also research Miami weather a lot, what Im trying to say is Im surprised that Im the only one it seems who knows about tornadoes in Miami.

hi, im planning to move to either north or south carolina in a few years (i cant decide which state right now, theyre both beautiful and full of history). anyways, when im about to move to a place, 1 of the things i look at is what natural disasters can happen there, like in california, earthquakes, in some of the midwest, tornadoes, etc. my question is do the carolinas have hurricanes, particularly charlotte or charleston? to my understanding from hurricanes on the news, it doesnt seem hurricanes have hit a state north of florida, but who knows, i could be wrong. i know that area doesnt have earthquakes, it doesnt have snow a lot, but theres the heat/humidity to deal with, but do they have hurricanes? do they also have tornadoes?

The midwest can have tornadoes, the Gulf of Mexico area can have hurricanes, California can have earthquakes, etc… Either in the US or in the World, where are there no natural disasters? This can include extreme temperatures that causes deaths as well… Does such a place exist where nobody dies due to the weather? I live in Arizona and it’s pretty disaster-free, but we can have extreme heat and flash floods and people can die in small numbers due to those.
And now that hes decided its the Govts job to protect people from the weather that is typical to thier regions how long til he extends that protection to Florida. And while hes at it could he come here to Tornado Alley and promise to protect us from an F5 tornado. And then I would be really impressed if he could go to California and promise to protect them from a 9.9 Earthquake. And if he could do something about the ice storms in the midwest while hes not busy Id love that. Those crops are almost as important as New Orleans casinos and strip clubs. Is he making these promises to divert attention from the one thing he will never work to protect us from? Yes Im talking about terrorism. More people died on 911 than all US natural disasters. But thats no reason to work to make us safer from that real threat. I mean we all know its way more popular to stand around a bunch of flooded houses making false promises to those desparate people. Its called Band Wagoning Obama, and its insulting.

Except you failed to identify the cost to improving these levves to withstand a category five storm and whether or not that cost is justified when compared to the needs of some much of the countries infrastructure. Or maybe we should spend all our money on New Orleans Levees and then we can all just move in there and be safe?
Yeah, yeah….I know. The city is basically still destroyed and they have not made any significant advancements in rebuilding it.
But many hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other natural disasters have hit our homeland and within the year we heard nothing more about it.
Did the people affected by Hurricane Andrew years ago receive debit cards from FEMA? What about the flood victims in the midwest? Why isn’t their wall-to-wall coverage of their plight like it was for Hurricane Katrina?
And two more questions: People wonder why New Orleans is taking so long to be rebuilt?
a. This city is BELOW sea level. It fills up like a bowl when it is flooded. What insurance company wants to insure that?
b. The crime in that city is ridiculous. Who wants to move back to a place murder is high and the police force is crippled?

I am in the midwest, and if the weather service does not report a tornado warning they treat the people who say they saw one or had damage like fools. Its like the DNR in Iowa never believed reports on Mt Lions, but they are here. There have been some hit by cars. Now the DNR has to admit we have them in Iowa.
They call it a "flat wind" if they didn’t spot a funnel cloud on the radar. Must make them look bad.
Why do people from tornado alley and the south say that they don’t want to move to california because of earthquakes when every year there is almost a guranteed season of detrimental hurricanes in the south and many deadly tornados in the midwest. When was the last time an earthquake did anything more than knock a vase off the shelf, 15 years ago?
I recently got a letter from my mortgage company, offering me an additional insurance policy that will pay my mortgage payment if my home is damaged by a disaster for up to 24 months. And for each month that we can’t live in our home, it pays 00 to us. If the house is condemned, they will pay off the mortgage. If we ever make a claim on our regular homeowner’s policy and have a deductible we need to pay, this policy would reimburse that amount, up to twice a year.
It’s pretty cheap coverage…less than a month. I’m trying to figure out if this is something we need. We live in the Midwest, and our area does not have huge weather events, but it does have occasional tornadoes.
Living in the midwest we’ve had tornado warnings like crazy. We have no where to go other than in a closet in our apartments. Someone told me there is a law about having a shelter under the stairs somewhere? Is this true?
