Over the years my sister and I have not been very close. Usually it is a few years on of talking then a few years off. So our relationship has always been strained.

16 days ago, Hurricane Ike swept through my neighborhood! I text-ed my best friend in Georgia, who kindly sent emails to my family and friends to let them know how we were doing since we have been without power for 15 days.

My family knows we have been spared so much as we have seen the devastation around us. We have a fence down, broken motion lights, one tree that fell, one more tree that has started to uproot so that needs to come down as it is leaning toward our house, stucco that needs to be repaired on the front of our house etc. Our insurance adjuster is supposed to be out this week to inspect our roof. Some of our neighbors have had much more damage then us and we have been trying to help them get thorough.

But we are alive and very grateful! We have 10 people in our family (My husband, myself and 8 children) We did have a generator that ran our frig and a few fans to help us get through. But by no means has it been easy. Getting homework done by flashlights, doing laundry in the tub, fighting mosquitoes, just to name a few.

During this time, all of our neighbors came together to help one another, helping cut downed trees, sharing food, and just making talk! We took our next door neighbor under our wing and made sure she had ice for her medication, a hot meal off our grill most nights etc (as she is single and elderly) We did offer our home but she refused to leave her pets over night. I did go to one of the PODS (for ice, water, MRE’s) and took all the kiddos with me. When we arrived they asked how many families were were helping and I explained to them what I was trying to do. Help all the neighbors on my corner since I had the bigger van. All of my neighbors were shocked that I thought of them after waiting for two hours in line. They said they would have never thought to tell anyone that they were helping the rest of the neighbors. By the time I got home, everyone was waiting for me in the driveway!! Never would I have expected to see so many thrill excited people! It was well worth it to me…the long wait to help my neighbors even though the kiddos were cranky.

Nonetheless, my sister works at a walmart store and she called me 5 days after the storm and told me that they were having a potluck on our behalf to help us out. This is the first thing my sister has ever done for me..I was overjoyed people that we did not know were coming together to help us.

My sister called me after the potluck! They raised 455.00 for us. WOW!! With price goudging, long lines, short supplies on money and food…my thought was I can help my neighbors out more.

That same night my sister called to tell me, they have been behind on their van payment and they just received a letter saying if they did not pay the one payment they were behind the van will be repossessed. (hummm…the timing of it all!)

I told her if she needed to use the money fine. Her response was I will get the money to you tomorrow (8 days days after the storm-Saturday). If I kept and used the money that would be unethical. Wow!! My sister is growing up..I thought!

Monday my sister called (10 days after the storm) and said to me…is it okay if I borrow the money, I will pay you back. (Keep in mind she owes her in-laws 7K and she is always borrowing money from people) But she is always taking trips to visit people out of state, eatting out ect. (For my sister it is her, her husband and 2 children and they make about 50K a year) I told my sister…do what you think is best.

Her response to me was, I don’t know if you need the money more then we do. I told her I could not answer that! All I could tell her was, our local credit union was closed and we had no access to any money and the one bank that we had access to had 210.00 in the account. Again she said she would send the money tomorrow.

I called her Wednesday to ask her if she decided what she was going to do, she said "I send you a money order, I kept some money and I sent you some money…this way it BENEFITS us both"

I of course am talking to my best friend about this and she sent my sister a letter. Telling my sister how everyone is in financial distress and how selfish it is of her to raise money at work for our family here and then for her (my sister) to try to benefit for herself. My friend told her outright, if she kept a penny of the money she would be committing fraud amoung her co-workers. My friend also asked if my sister told her co-workers what she was thinking about doing and that my friend was thinking about calling her manager to tell them what she was doing.

My sister called and left a message that the remaining money would be in the mail. She did not want my friend calling her job because she would get fired and she said that she thought I could be a sister that could help he

A hurricane destroys most of the fishing boats on the Macro Islands but leaves the lobster traps untouched. Boats are not needed to collect the trapped lobsters. People enjoy eating fresh fish with tartar sauce and lobster with drawn butter equally. Explain the effect of the hurricane on the demand and supply for fresh fish.

Demand / Supply

The last hurricane that passed through were the gas stations equipped with backup generators, were the shelters properly surveyed for proper usage, were inventory made on food and medical supplies that could be made available for use after the disaster passed away. Were the hospital and other emergency establishments equipment with backup generators. We should always be prepared, the season will soon be here again. Just look around you and what do you see?

When Hurricane Katrina ripped through the southern United States in August 2005, the authorities were overwhelmed and the governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, appealed to the international community for emergency medical aid. The Cuban government immediately offered assistance to New Orleans and to the states of Mississippi and Alabama, also affected by the storm, and promised that within 48 hours 1,600 doctors, trained to deal with such catastrophes, would arrive with all the necessary equipment plus 36 tonnes of medical supplies. This offer, and another made directly to President George Bush, went unanswered. In the catastrophe at least 1,800 people, most of them poor, died for lack of aid and treatment.

That is, have any of these monsters survived as hurricanes and continued on westwards after crossing land? I suppose while over land, they would probably be downgraded to a tropical storm, but has any of them become a hurricane again on the other side?

I’m trying to understand how supply and demand works but I’m overthinking it and could use some pointers.

Assume that a major hurricane wipes out over 50% of all rubber trees in Central America. How would this effect the demand, supply, equilibrium price, and equilibrium quantity (Increase, Decrease, or No Change) of Rubber.

She’s a single mother of two and very poor. She lost her job due to a hurricane and had apparently sold her car about a week before the storm hit. She spent the money on buying supplies for the storm since she had no way to leave. FEMA is gay and will not help because she was living in a hotel. They didn’t even offer to help her pay to stay there. She is now working in the hotel she was staying at but they are paying her only 3 dollars a room to clean and its a small hotel. She needs a car bad and no one will help her or can help her. What can she do?

It is realy sad because they offered her food stamps but no way to get another job or back and forth to this job. Her EX never pays child support and he’s in jail so there will be no "going after him" he’s already in jail so they can’t do much there. POS CPS came to her hotel room after people reported she was prosituting and the kids were eating out of the garbage. This is F’D up since she would never prostitute and I help her buy food and i know there is always food there. CPS caseworkers should be shot IMO and they are lucky i was not there when they said these things. I respect this woman but I cannot help her with a car because I do not make that much. BTW this is the 4th time someone has called CPS on her and everytime they leave with no findings and everytime they never say "Sorry" ever.

I need answers and saving to buy one is hardly an option at this point, she needs to go back to work.

I’ve seen what a hurricane can do to land and people, its devastating. But I have always wondered, what happens to the life in the sea? Is the hurricane just as bad at sea? What are the effects on the sea and oceans when hurricanes, typhoons or monsoons occur?

I hope I get some good answers…:)

Okay, they’ve had a complete disaster…like 20+ thousand people have apparently died, and they are missing about 40,000 to 50,000 people. Nations of the world are trying to send food and supplies to those in Myanmar who need it. But their stupid government isn’t allowing "foreigners" into the country. From what I have read in the news, the government is exchanging good food coming in (what little gets in, that is) with poor food…and shipping the poor food to the people involved in the disaster. Apparently the military is keeping the good food. What is wrong with this picture, and why is this Yangon/Myanmar government being so stupid about refusing help? It seems to be a rather poor place without the cyclone/hurricane that hit. Even more so now that it has hit…and it seems that some of the political leaders are trying to ‘label’ food cartons with their name, to try to make a big name for themselves and look like the hero.

I want to become a meteorologist.
I want a Masters Degree in Meteorology. I want to go to Cornell or Penn State. Then I want to work for the Weather Channel. I want to be the Weather Channel’s Storm Tracker. If an area is under a tornado watch I want to go out and report on it. If there is a hurricane threatning land I want to go out and be near the eye.

Plus I want to meet my future wife in high school.

If I go out in a hurricane or catch wild weather on tape like a tornado, do ou think Fox 13 would use it? Do they pay for videos? How would I get the video back? How will they get the video in time to play it on the news on the evening of the day I captured the severe weather on my camcorder?

I’ve always wanted to get a good chance to talk to a Muslim American and ask them a million questions.

Like is it hard being a Muslim in America?

Are people as half as shameless about their bigotry in the real world as they are online toward you?

What is good about America for Muslims to live in it?

What did you feel when you watch the Twin Towers fall?

What do you feel about groups like Al Qaida? Do you want to see them hunted down or reformed?

The only experience I think I ever had with Muslims was when a hurricane knocked out the utilities a Muslim temple came by and provided hot meals, hot showers, baby supplies, light repairs to homes to prevent further damage, and help clear debris from the road…

My area was devastated by Hurricane Ike. I went to a POD site near my workplace one day last week during lunch and it was my only visit. There was no power at work at the time but I did have power at home. The only supplies I picked up was 2 bags of ice, 1 case of water, and 3 single MREs. When I got back several people in the office started yelling at me about taking food away from families and children in desperate need. I know 2 of these people who were yelling at me had been going to the POD site every single day (bragged about how much they had stockpiled at home) and neither of them have kids. The next day when I came in to work there was photo of a child starving in Africa taped to my computer along with a note that said "Thanks to you this is what will happen to a family you greedy selfish whore". The only reason I got the supplies is that I had no money except for what little cash was in my wallet, and the cash was needed for gas since I live over 30 miles from my job. The ice and water were because I had been ill for several days and I finally got to a point where I just needed some cold water.
MetalQueen: You are a cold, heartless witch. Until you experience the destructive power of a hurricane first hand SHUT THE HELL UP!

I want to live in Clearwater, Florida one day and just don’t want a hurricane to destroy my house. So is there such thing? And if there is, will I still need to evacuate when the hurricane comes?

Your on a Cargo Plane carrying supplies to a village in Africa in relief efforts from a recent Hurricane… While passing over a wide expanse of water a storm unexpectedly rolls in and causes malfunctions.. Your plane crashes into the ocean..

You wake up on a beach, three others have survived and 5 things have washed up from the wreckage… Out of rationality you realize no one is coming to look for you and you soon find out the island is completely deserted…

Who are the three survivors and what are the five things that would have washed ashore?

…what companies would you add to it?

*a buycott is the opposite of a boycott…I think it would be better to find the "good" companies and buy from them, and not buy from the "bad companies. The people (consumers) should deal with the greedy ones and reward the non-greedy ones. And the gov’t should stay out. (my opinion).

My list so far:
publix (I’ve heard they treat their employees really well).

chick-filet

oreck vacuum cleaners

colgate (he gives lots to charity)

whole foods…I like the owner, who doesn’t take a salary anymore.

freds…the manager donated toys and art supplies to the people staying in the shelter after our last major hurricane

.Can anyone think of anymore, or is there some buycott list somewhere already that I don’t know about?
And I don’t know how this question got posted in this section…that’s so weird. That’s been happening a lot, I’ve noticed…my questions getting posted in categories I didn’t put them in.

How come Mexico is not making any offers of help or sending any aid to Haiti but they did to Texas when it was their people any reason why no help to the country of Haiti? In Texas Mexico sent food, water, medical dr’s, nurses, medical supplies, clothes, after the hurricane hit Texas and the areas had a high population of illegals but so far Mexico has not made any public offers to help out that country, Mexico has enough money to help out ? One drug cartel suitcase full of money would help out Haiti, would Mexico make a sincere effort to help out if their people were over there ?

You’ve considered two different economic shocks resulting from Katrina:

1) An aggregate supply shock: Katrina increased energy prices and temporarily reduced U.S. productive capacity.
2) An aggregate demand shock: Government responded to the hurricane with massive expenditures on aid and rebuilding.

What does the aggregate supply and aggregate demand model predict about the combined impact of these shocks on the U.S. economy?

A. Real GDP may rise or fall, but the price level will definitely rise.

B. Real GDP will definitely fall, but the price level will definitely rise.

C. Real GDP may rise or fall, but the price level will definitely fall.

D. Real GDP will definitely rise, but the price level may rise or fall.

I think it’s A, because only the price level changes in the long run, correct?
