Peru suffers from earthquakes and landslides due to floodings. The worst earthquakes have been in the years 1940, 1970 (where part of the mount Huascaran broke from the Andes and killed a whole town – Yungay), in 1974, 1986 and recently in 2007 where the south was partially destroyed and thousand died.
Floodings and landslides occur in the highlands (Sierra) at the end of practically every summer due to the rains (when the ice melts and floods the rivers).
There aren’t tornadoes or hurricanes in Peru, sometime a bit of drought in northern Peru where there is a desert (Sechura desert).

Peru has a long history of eartquakes and other natural disasters. The strongest earthquake in Peru’s history is the one in 1746, this earthquake was followed by a tsunami and killed around 5000 people. May 31, 1970 is a day that Peru still remembers, around 66,000 people lost their lifes and around 200 000 homes where destroyed in this earthquake that had a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scaleand. Beside the earthquakes, another natural disaster that strikes Peru is El Niño, which is an abnormal warming of surface ocean waters in the Pacific Ocean. El Niño refers to the Christ Child because it is noticed in December. El Niño occurs every 5-6 years, but this has changed, the last time Peru suffer from the phenomen El Niño was in 1998.
Also, in the high lands, during the rainy season some areas gets flash floods or as we say in Peru: Huaycos.
