Most frightening natural disaster?

Tornado Questions
Of all natural disasters that could possibly occur, which would you be most frightened to be in the heart of, and why?
Would knowing that you’re in the heart of a 9.0 earthquake terrify you? Would being with 5 miles of a major errupting volcano horrify you? How about living on the ocean side during an enormous tsunami? Witnessing an F5 Tornado in the middle of a city? Living near a major mountain during an avalanche? How about living in the heart of a flood, and as you go out your door, the water from the flood rushes inside your house?

There isn’t just one. All of them are. They are all different, but terrifying and destructive.

I would say a major earthquake.
Besides the obvious issue of fissures opening and buildings falling down, you have broken gas lines which cause fires, such as in San Fran in 1906.
You also have the problem of bridges and highway over passes falling, cutting the roads off and isolating parts of the city, such as happened in the LA quake. Even if the fire department is able to respond, they may not be able to get to the fires.
Lastly, it would be a large disaster that you can not avoid and there could be millions of people effected. When the big one hits in California it is going to make Katrina look like a picnic at the stadium.
(Unless you want to add super volcano to the list. If Yellowstone or Long Valley cut loose, that would be a world wide disaster.)

The one I’d have the least chance of surviving.
I’d call that a pyroclastic flow during a volcanic eruption. Impossible to outrun, 100% deadly.

Astoroid Impact would be the Scariest. Even if the Military did rocket the asteroid it would go into thousands of small pieces, making the surface area of it larger – Meaning it could kill, Millions.

If it’s in the past, I would say either the Mt Vesuvius explosion or the 1976 Tangshan earthquake.
If it’s in the future I would definitely go with when the sun gobbles up the Earth!

The one I’d be most frightened to be "in the heart of" is a super-large volcanic explosion, such as the eruption of the Yellowstone caldera. Because it might not kill me right away, but an explosion that’s large enough could be a global extinction-level event; so anyone who wasn’t killed in the initial blast would face several years of miserable existence before dying.
I’d place that above a major asteroid impact, even, based on your criteria "in the heart of", because if the asteroid were large enough anyone within several thousand square miles would be dead before they even knew what had happened. I’d rather die quick than see a super-volcano exploding and know that my world and everyone in it was doomed to a slow death.
