Mommies do you have a tornado safety plan?

Tornado Safety
I’m terrified of storms and tornadoes, and living in TN tornadoes can happen anytime really. My house doesn’t have a basement so we always go in our bedroom closet or interior hallway, which still doesnt leave me feeling safe. When your area is under a warning do you take it seriously or do you keep on making dinner or whatever? I panic. LOL. I know when my son gets older I will have to learn to stay calm so he doesnt get scared but I don’t know how I’ll ever do it.

I live in Oklahoma so I know what you mean. In a few months we will have MANY tornado warnings. They scare me, I freak out. As a matter of fact anytime we’ve looked for a house a basement is always the first thing I look for. We lucked out this time bc our basement door is in the garage so we never have to go outside! YAY! Like I said I freak, but only in my head. When our county gets under the warning I leave it on the news and watch. If the tornado circulation gets with in thirty miles of us, I move the blankets, water bottles, etc. into the garage but still go about my buisness so that my three kids dont get histarical and if by chance the circulation gets with in say 10 miles–We’re in the base ment fast and I can just throw all that stuff down : )

I live in hurricane territory and people in this area don’t take warnings and watches seriously. We do because we lived in Ft. Lauderdale and well, hurricanes DO hit. Up here, people just say “We haven’t had a hurricane in 10 years†and they carry on with their day.
We made our employees give us emergency contact numbers and gave them our hurricane plan for the company….they all looked at us like we were crazy.
Honestly…anyone who doesn’t take stuff seriously, THEY are crazy. Because when you soon realize that the storm IS coming, usually it’s too late to prep.
I’d rather be safe then stupid and sorry.

I am just like you. I remember one time at 7 years old there was a tornado warning for COUNTIES over but I didn’t care cause that just scared the hell out of me. : ( I was a crying mess. That was 9 years ago and I sitll don’t like them. Maybe because it’s weather I’ve never had to experience and since I don’t know that it’ll be okay and it’s under control I HATE it.
But normally, because we rarely get them we don’t pay too much attention to them. If we did have one then we’d go into any of the bathrooms and the bedroom closet. We actually have a fire, tornado, etc safety plan because one) my brother wanted one and two) we are required to have one since my mom signed up to be a foster parent.

I take it seriously. I probably wouldn’t if I hadn’t seen the F-5 1997 Jarrell, TX tornado w/ my own eyes.
We go in the front bathroom and get in the tub w/ a mattress.

yes, get in the hall closet when there is a warning…not a watch

We do have a tornado plan. When the weather is bad, we keep a close eye on it. If we have a warning, my daughter grabs her guinea pigs and removes them to the play pen in the basement. My son is responsible for making sure the dog leash is looped over the stairs going into the basement and that the dog is in the house. I carry the lizard tank down. When the sirens go off, we all head to the basement, turn on the radio, pull out a deck of cards and play until the warning passes.
We lived in TN/KY for three years in a single level home. I remember one spring we slept in the closet at the center of the house on a futon mattress for an entire week. The sirens went off almost every night just as I was getting kids into bed.

I have a plan for most things.. storms of all kinds, fire and/or burglary’s. I live on the ground floor so in case of fire. get the kids and get out the first window you can.. I am insured we can buy new stuff.
same with burglary’s
warning or not, I pay attention to both,, making a light dinner that I can forget about it I have to leave it.. I have a closet that is always cleaned out incase I have to get into it. there is a kit in there. flash light and stuff and I always have my cell phone handy where I can grab it and take it with me.
