Tornadoes frequently from near the rear flank downdraft of a supercell thunderstorm. Supercells can be recognized by their obvious rotation, either visually or on Doppler radar. The rear flank downdraft will form at the rear of the storm (hence its name), then gradually wrap around the storm. A wall cloud (a rotating, sharp-edged lowering of part of the main cloud base) often appears just before a tornado develops. See link for assorted pictures of supercells.

Wall clouds - the front of the storm that looks like a huge wall coming at you! When the cold and warm airs mix they usually result in clouds spinning and in wall clouds they are more likely to form.

Tornadoes generally occur near the trailing edge of a thunderstorm. It is not uncommon to see clear, sunlit skies behind a tornado.
