my friend’s mom said that in the 30 years she’s lived here, there’s been only like one tornado and it hit a shopping center thing and all it did was knock down a few fences…?

The town of Allen by itself has seen only one tornado between 1950 and 2006. It was an F0 rated tornado on March 17, 1987. However, in the county of Collin (where Allen is located), there have been 40 other tornadoes reported in those year. A few of them were significant with an F3 rating. Most of them were weak with a rating of only F0 or F1.
The last tornado to hit your county was an F3 on May 9, 2006. It caused three fatalities and ten injuries unfortunately.
Being in Tornado Alley, you must always be prepared for a tornado to strike. Especially in the spring months when they are most common in your area. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Since Texas is part of Tornado Alley, you are vulnerable to some very destructive tornadoes. However, the chances of a tornado strike is obviously small based on what your friend’s mom stated.

I strongly recommend tornado planning and a very, very strong shelter under ground level. If necessary, combine with neighbors to make one.
But if one can afford to build the house correctly that is better.
Still not likely to be equal to a Big Buster Tornado making a direct hit. But MOST OF THE TIME a tornado is passing in some other way than a direct hit, if at all.
Tornadoes are up this year. If one comes, hopefully it will focus on the Golf Course.
Better to be prepared than caught by surprise.
You live in such a location.
