Tornado Questions
if they do get tornadoes i would think they dont get them as often as the ones in nebraska or kansas and i wander if they get them f4 or f5 tornaodes. i understand alot ofn people there dont drive but if they get threatened by a bad typoon how do them people head to higher ground to avoid storm surge like we do here in america. i would think even if they did head for higher ground they still would not be safe because some of them islands are small. or maybe they take a ferry to another island to be safer if they call for a mandatory evacuation

We don’t have tornadoes that Dorothy would find in Kansas. We have typhoons – hurricanes in North Atlantic – but I haven’t heard of mandatory evacuations, we just wait them out.

yes we do get tornadoes here in the philippines…
i have seen news reports on our local networks that
some parts of luzon and visayas experienced such natural calamities
we are not prepared for such devastation and i saw on the news that they hardly had the time to look for refuge… they either stay at their homes or find some sturdy place or things to hold on to… until its over
tornadoes that the country experience is very mild compared to the ones US have in terms of the numbers (quantity) they have experienced it, on how strong (quality), and how much damage it causes…
mostly it ruins light material houses (wherein most houses are actually built from in the country side), uproots trees, and destroys farms and harvests… i haven’t heard anyone dying from it… but perhaps there could have been…
regarding evacuation… i don’t think i’ve ever heard anything regarding tornadoes being broadcast and mandatory evacuation being announced ever… maybe it is only on the areas concerned that this announcements are heard…
we focus more on volcanic eruptions, typhoons and floods as well as el nino as the countries worst natural calamities…

Tornadoes are quite rare in the Philippines but for the last few years, there have been some sightings of small tornadoes (more of a twirling wind than a tornado) that has caused minor damages but no casualties. Weather in the Philippines has been weird for the past years. Global warming? You never see tornadoes in tropical countries like the Philippines however typhoons are common. Typhoons are not as strong as hurricanes so storm surges are mild to moderate. Also the configuration of the islands keeps the surge low unless you stay in areas facing the open Pacific ocean. The islands basically serves as a buffer to the waves. But warnings are given to houses living along coastal areas, most of which are poor people in shanty houses. Don’t be too concerned, Filipinos are used to this natural events. If you will be staying in an area prone to typhoon, be sure your house is in higher grounds and not easily flooded and roof is well made. If you have other concerns just give me a private message

tornadoes are rare in the Philippines! last time i’ve heard of one here was maybe 8-9 years ago somewhere in Laguna, and it was just a small one that didn’t blow through houses.

As far as I have known and seen, we only get squalls. They resemble like thin tornadoes and may cause slight to moderate destruction.
