Maybe a Sisal rug (low maintenance - high durability) soft white and blue walls with nice graphic framed posters. The radio should have a cabinet as should the food so it looks more like a little apartment than a "shelter". Also consider nice blankets and sheets for sleeping and be sure to bring in some good books and CD's (don't forget batteries). It isn't a bad idea to grow an Aloe or other dry friendly plant that you can attend to there and use the shelter on occasion for private chats and "tea" so it isn't just an emergency place. It is part of your home so it should be cozy and inviting. Don't forget to use potpourri or other clean fragrance option to keep the room smelling fresh and put vanilla or linen scented candles there so if you need them they have a pleasant scent. Good Luck!
