How good is the shelter in place plan for tornados if you live in a mobile home or an apartment?
I was taling to the emgerency mangement in my city because I lost power during a storm. I had no way of acessing information because the only portable tv I had working at the time was a non digital tv. I was scared so I got in my car to drive to my mom’s 15 minutes away. I know it was dangerous but there was a break in the storms.
When I was a quarter of my way there a severe storm started again. I drove around trying to find a business that had a basement. The only place that did was a bar. After that incident I talked to the emergency management lady and she told me I should have stayed there and sheltered in place.
Sheltering in place is where you stay at home and create a tornado safe room for yourself. Has anyone heard of this and what exactly do you use? She told me I needed to attend the class to find out more.
I live in an apartment building so how good is sheltering in place when you are on a 2nd or 3rd floor or live in a mobile home. Most buildings are designed to only withstand up to 90 mph which is only an F1. If anything hits that is stronger what would happen?
How come they can’t come up with a better plan such as recquiring all mobile home complexes and apartment complexes to have safe shelters. How can sheltering in place overcome poor construction or uninforced buildings? For being 2010 it sure sounds like outdated advice. I expected more.
I agree with you that is why I don’t understand the whole sheltering in place. If someone lives in a home with a basement or lives on the lowest floor I could understand. What good would sheltering in place do if you are on the third floor and the roof is gone; the floor has collasped, windows are broken etc. My concern is people will be killed more this way by creating a safe space in their own homes such as a mobile home or upper level apartments.
I know what it takes to have a safe shelter; that would be reinforced concrete with steel bars; no windows. If I can figure this out why can’t builders. We have a prison that is built to withstand an f5 tornado; if this is possible why can’t builders do the same with the law abiding citzens by building them safe homes?
Can you have a safe room built into a rented apartment? I have a huge walk in closet if this was my place I would have it installed there. I also rent a garage that is partially underground. I doubt any apartment would let me do that.
