I was taling to the emgerency mangement in my city because I lost power during a storm. I had no way of acessing information because the only portable tv I had working at the time was a non digital tv. I was scared so I got in my car to drive to my mom’s 15 minutes away. I know it was dangerous but there was a break in the storms.
When I was a quarter of my way there a severe storm started again. I drove around trying to find a business that had a basement. The only place that did was a bar. After that incident I talked to the emergency management lady and she told me I should have stayed there and sheltered in place.
Sheltering in place is where you stay at home and create a tornado safe room for yourself. Has anyone heard of this and what exactly do you use? She told me I needed to attend the class to find out more.
I live in an apartment building so how good is sheltering in place when you are on a 2nd or 3rd floor or live in a mobile home. Most buildings are designed to only withstand up to 90 mph which is only an F1. If anything hits that is stronger what would happen?
How come they can’t come up with a better plan such as recquiring all mobile home complexes and apartment complexes to have safe shelters. How can sheltering in place overcome poor construction or uninforced buildings? For being 2010 it sure sounds like outdated advice. I expected more.
I agree with you that is why I don’t understand the whole sheltering in place. If someone lives in a home with a basement or lives on the lowest floor I could understand. What good would sheltering in place do if you are on the third floor and the roof is gone; the floor has collasped, windows are broken etc. My concern is people will be killed more this way by creating a safe space in their own homes such as a mobile home or upper level apartments.
I know what it takes to have a safe shelter; that would be reinforced concrete with steel bars; no windows. If I can figure this out why can’t builders. We have a prison that is built to withstand an f5 tornado; if this is possible why can’t builders do the same with the law abiding citzens by building them safe homes?
Can you have a safe room built into a rented apartment? I have a huge walk in closet if this was my place I would have it installed there. I also rent a garage that is partially underground. I doubt any apartment would let me do that.

I have a house that has never been remodeled in any big way, and the hallway has a lower ceiling than anywhere else. All other rooms have ceilings that are the same height. Is this for storm shelter, such as Tornado forecasts. The house also has a basement, so I wonder if anyone knows if the storms are the reason for this, or maybe it saves energy?

Ok, please bear with me, I’ve never really seen a tornado in real life, I live very south in Texas where they hardly occur. However, a few months ago I was constantly having dreams about tornadoes. In the dreams the tornadoes would form over me or close to me, and I would then run, sprint by myself, to take shelter because they we’re heading straight towards me. Then at the end of my dream I would wait for the tornado to hit, knowing I would probably not make it, and wake up. Here’s an important fact, I used to have these dreams almost every week towards the end of my relationship with my ex of four years. Now, I have a new boyfriend who makes me happier than I’ve ever been, I stopped having nightmares, but after about a month into our relationship, I had the last dream I’ve had about tornadoes. In the dream it was bright, daytime outside and a tornado formed, so i took shelter in this broken down brick building, the only building there was since i was in a desert. As I took shelter I found a newborn baby that looked like it was still supposed to be an early fetus, crying and starved. So, I took the baby in my arms and fed it something that resembled oatmeal, while i waited for the tornado to pass, and then I woke up. We’ve been together four months now, and I still haven’t had a dream about tornadoes. What could this last dream resemble? I wasn’t really scared in it like the other dreams I remember, but it made me made me question it a lot.

I often have tornadoes in my dreams. Last night I actually dreamt that the tornado went through. I was in a van with several people and we thought it would be funny to tell the driver there was a tornado. Then, we realized there actually was one. A separate dream: running for safety with my baby (in real life 15 months old, in my dream, only an infant) in my arms. We were about 3 feet from reaching a somewhat more sheltered place, but it hit fast, and I just knelt down with him holding him tight. the tornado about blew him out of my arms and he was lifeless afterwards for a few minutes until he started to show signs of life. Another dream the same night: I have all these clothes to pick from, trying to find a pretty outfit to wear. Also, an artist competition and the judges are deciding between a child and a more experienced grown man, even though the child is much better, they don’t know who to go with (i just realized, i think that’s from the vp debate last night!)

Anyone good at interpreting dreams, or could tell me what tornadoes usually represent?

ever since i was 12 or 13, I have been terrified of tornadoes or any kind of severe thunderstorm. I am always checking the weather when i see the sky getting dark and i freak out so much, i keep thinking i’m having a heart attack… and it’s even worse because my parents are gone for almost 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. we have a small ( and in my opinion, an unsturdy) house in the suburbs and i have no plan for when a tornado does hit. Any ideas on where we could go for shelter?

So, I work in a greenhouse/farmers’ market and we’ve been having a lot of tornado activity lately. I’m assuming that my bosses have a plan for what would happen if there was a tornado, but just in case they don’t, I’d like your opinion.
The greenhouse has roll-down, plastic sides, so I’m assuming that I DON’T want to be there during a tornado. The farmers’ market portion has multiple, large garage doors on the front and back. Because the building has no basement and the only permanent shelters in the area are private homes, what would we do if a tornado WERE to touch down?

Well, I would like to know, how to stay safe during a tornado.

There are windows in EVERY room (including the bathroom. D:), there are glass decorations everywhere. (including bedrooms, and hallway), and we only have two tables. Well, a counter a table.

There are 3 closets. And two mattresses.

The window, is right above the toilet, and the toilet is beside the bathtub.

If the area was under tornado watch, I could go to my friends house, but not every single time. (since she is going on vacation).

I dont have an emergency kit either.

Where would be a safe places to go?

I have no basement, and I live in an apartment.

We dont have any type of shelter either.

I’ve had a reoccurring dream over the last 10 years that I can remember. It started out with me either chasing or being chased by a tornado, sometimes multiple ones. Some dreams I would seek shelter, only to have it blown away and running to the next shelter. The last year or so it has involved me trying to help save & protect people and get them away from the danger. The people are almost always strangers, and the majority of the time it’s a child.

Does anyone have any clue on what this means?

I’ve dreampt of tornadoes (3 or more) several times before. I can always see them forming along the hills and valleys and they never come close but they’re always out there. The latest dream had a cloudless day and one cloud spun around forming a blanket of clouds and tornadoes popped up. It never storms or rains. And when we go to shelter, I’m always the oldest child there.

So what do these symbols (I guess that’s what they can be called?) mean?

ive recently been trying to find some old movies i used to watch back when i was around 3-6 (im 15 now). i have very vague memories of them and im trying to piece together their story lines so i can try and find them but im having a bit of trouble :P

i already found one that i was looking for, there just two more.

(dont mind the little, probably useless details i might throw in)

the first one was half animation and half real people, at the beginning there was a kid riding a bike, i think it was yellow, and there were some kids jumping their bikes off a ramp, it starts to rain and the kid takes shelter in a library, something happens and then hes inside a book or something, which is now animated. i cant remember the middle part of the movie but at the end there is some big tornado-like thing made of books and some kinda blue light, and he gets sucked into it and hes back to where he was in the library as a real person, then he goes outside and jumps the bike ramp, or something, im not too sure, he might have jumped the bike ramp at the start :/ and i think at some point while hes out the front of the library a street light blows up or something >.< i cant remember.

the second movie i really think is a lost cause, all i can remember is that at the beginning theres a kid in a house, it might be real life people, it might be animated, i know the middle and end parts of the movie is animated, but i dont know if the start is, but anyway some kids in his house and it starts raining or something happens and theres a flood in the house, the kid is transformed into a little animal and they chill in the house or something for a bit, theres a bunch of other animals there too, but somewhere in the middle i think they go into a city, and then at the end there is some big storm and i think a rooster dies and is brought back to life in the middle of the storm, thats all i can remember >.<

thanks for your time and any details on the movies im trying to remember would be helpful, even little memories you might have of them, thank you again ^_^
no luck yet sorry >.<
ROCK A DOODLE!!! OMG XD thank you so much!!!
page master, yup thats it :D thank chuu

i was watching TV and saw so many different updates about famous ppl and organizations donating millions and millions of dollars and clothes and food and im thinking "whoa! this 0 million dollars you have stashed away couldnt have been used earlier to help ppl in america?!"

We are in an economic crisis and have so many homeless ppl and the rates are growing each year! so much of that money could be used to build homeless shelters and centers that help ppl get back on their feet! We also have natural disasters all the time! A city close to mine was completely wiped out (the whole city) by a series of tornadoes and they were not helped as much as they could have been.

I know we should help others, im not saying i dont care. but does anyone else feel a little angry that so much money and funds are being used on other countries when its really needed at home?
some ppl are misunderstanding me.

im saying so many ppl have had money stashed away for so long, before the earthquake and havent done anything to help here in america. yes, i have seen dead bodies, smashed houses, many lives ruined. like i said, that tornado completely took out the whole city! (which is big!) but no one cared. kanye west didnt, george clooney didnt, even our own government denied help because apparently the damage has to reach a certain amount of money before they can pitch anything in. its disgusting.

but we can go across the world and take care of others. aside from the loss of lives, (im not saying whatsoever that losing a loved one is a good thing) this is a wonderful thing to happen to haiti, now they have the publicity, because all of a sudden, everyone actually cares and wants to help. people are going to get shelter they didnt have before the earthquake, people are going to have food they couldnt afford before the earthquake.

just saying…

I wish I could remember more details… but here I account what I remember:

I was sitting outside with some friends and the skies were getting darker and the air windier. Living in a region that is prone to tornadic weather (in my real life) we were just watching the clouds form in a common-day/matter-of-fact disposition. When I realized a hook was starting to form.

We all had to take off running and while I can’t remember who all my friends were in the dream… I do recall that our running was a stampede of a lot of people—strangers even—all booking it to find shelter. Along the way some people were stopping in shacks (we were in a wooded and mountainous area… as if we had been camping)—but I encouraged my friends to keep running and not stop with the rest of the flock to seek shelter in these places they were choosing.

We stopped at the rock formation that looked like a natural stairwell and crouched below/behind it. We could hear the tornado gaining speed. I don’t remember much else, I think I woke up soon after.

But if I remember correctly the tornado surpassed us and we just felt a lot of wind from behind our shelter.

Any interpretation is welcomed!

were you afraid?

I understand that the Weather Service uses two types of alerts: Watches and Warnings.
Watch – conditions are favorable, and a tornado might happen today.
Warning – Seek shelter NOW!

15-20 years ago, a tornado warning meant "there’s a tornado on the ground, seek shelter NOW"
Today, it’s "there’s a thunderstorm spinning overhead. It might produce a tornado, but it often doesn’t".

To me, that shows a need for a third level of alert.

Watch – Don’t plan on spending the day outside.
(whatever the new term is) – Spinning thunderstorm in the area.
Warning – Seek shelter NOW! – Tornado on the ground.

How can you make things up such as Socialist One World Government? Where does that come from? Or a scheme to make you pay more taxes?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Santa_Catarina_floods

Santa Catarina!
I’m from there, I’ve seen climate change with my own eyes, people I know lost their homes
Never a cyclone struck Brazil before.
Never had any tornadoes.
Worst storms, floods, heavy rain fall in the last 2 decades.
Billions spent on reconstruction
Thousands lost their homes and are STILL living on shelters

And that’s nor all! It’s happening all over the world more and more frequent..

Now you come here with all your BS that global warming is a hoax, just because "uuuuh I’m tooo afraid to pay more taxeeeez", "uUUUh my liberties"

How bad are we for trying to save others huh?
1oz of prevention is worth 2lb of cure
If you don’t know oz = ounces, and lb = pounds

You people are selfish.
Super Skeptic:
You are joking right?
I really want to believe you’re joking, cause if you’re not. Kill yourself.
coldfuse:
It’s not global warming?
Ok what is it then?
I’ll give the best answer to anyone who can give any suggestions..

Whoa!!!! calm down ppl. u are reading way too much into what i am saying.

i said (basically) isnt it rediculous that actors and singers and basketball players and all suddenly have millions to donate to them? if theyve just been stashin this money away for a rainy day, why hasnt it been used on america.

to me its a PR gimmick. "yeah! a natural disaster! now i can give money and look cool and people will love me!"

and to everyone who thinks they know my personal life. yes. working full time i have had to starve to keep a roof over my head. i have had to live in a car. no dead bodies, but i have seen bums living under bridges begging for someone to feed them.

im not saying that what happened in haiti isnt important. its a big deal! its horrible! but a natural disaster doesnt have magical powers that makes money appear! its been sitting, not being used when its needed here.

I’ve had the same two types of dreams since I was about 15 (now 23).

One consists of a tornado in very close proximity to me. I am usually in the process of taking cover, and they are usually at home. Sometimes it’s just me, sometimes I’m with family members, and I am usually calm and know the best place to take shelter (as if I’ve become experienced in my dream just by previous dreams). I have never been killed in one of these dreams, and actually I’m almost never injured by the tornado, but there have been several cases where I’ve become injured and/or trapped, but I immediately wake up. I have also once chased a tornado in a dream, without incident. I’d also like to mention that there is no correlation between my dream and actual weather conditions. It’s usually fine outside, and I even have these dreams in the winter. I have never seen a real tornado in my life.

My other type of dream involves volcanoes. I am actually afraid of volcanoes, so this makes more sense to me. However, I live nowhere near an active nor even dormant volcano. The dream never involves eruptions, nor ash, and only a few times have I ever actually seen a volcano in my dream. It’s usually lava flow that is chasing me, and I’m almost always alone, and usually panic-stricken. I have once died in a volcano, which was when I was actually on the volcano and my car fell into lava. Anyone that is with me is usually panicking too, but I did have one dream recently where someone I have romantic feelings for was with me, keeping me calm and guiding us out of harm’s way. This is probably very significant help as to why I have these dreams.

I have these dreams frequently, and as I’ve said, for about 8+ years now. This month to date, I’ve probably had around 3 volcano dreams and 2 tornado dreams. Aside from those, I wake up without recollection of my dreams.

Any idea how this can last for so long? I have no workplace issues, my family relationships are good, and my romantic relationships have obviously changed in the past 8 years. I’m very comfortable where I am in life and feel minimal stress, if any.
Response to first answerer: Fear, I suppose, can explain the constant volcano dreams, but I’m not afraid of tornadoes.

I live in a small town near the twin cities in Minnesota. 2 years ago, i was at the park and the tornado sirens went off. The next town over got hit by a E-F 3 tornado. ever since that day occurred I’ve been super scared. If any of you know how to not be scared, do you know anything that you could do while in shelter, or things you can say to yourself to make it sound like it’s alright. Right now theirs a tornado watch and i don’t know what to do, because I wish that people could think of games or things to do while taking shelter. Thanks and try to answer nicely so that i know how to face my fear and be confident. ~ CP

I found a little Pomeranian dog in the middle of the highway on my way to work this morning. He was about to be run over so I stopped and got him. My boss (the greatest man ever) has let me set him up in my office for the day We had tornadoes a couple of weeks ago and I think he might be lost so I’m calling all the vets and shelters to see if he’s been reported missing. His fur is matted a bit but he’s fat and helathy looking. I plan to take him out at lunch for a walk. He’s being very good and hasn’t barked all morning. How many bosses would let someone do that? He’s so cool!
