My family and I live in a bottom floor apartment complex, two stories high and fields all around. We leave in Mattoon Illinois and don’t know of think there is a storm shelter here. I do believe its inevitable that eventually a tornado will hit us, maybe not this year but some year soon I think. How would I find out if there is a storm shelter for the public in my town? I know where to go in our apartment thats supposedly the safest but I doubt it is since most people died and got sucked out the bathtubs!!

The storms are in the middle of the state, tornados on the ground. If you see where the town marked Muskogee is, I’m in the county directly to the east right in the middle. Can someone give me an idea of what’s about to happen? Any atmospheric conditions you might be aware of that will either send this storm to the south of us or make it fall apart in the next 2-3 hours? Two people have already died in this storm and I’m scared sh*tless. We don’t have a tornado shelter or anything (we’re renters so we have no choice about it).
Where I’m at is on the eastern edge next to Arkansas. The town is called Tahlequah if you know where that is. Please tell me something I’m going crazy.

Ok, so about 20 meters from me we have a tornado shelter, it’s a mound shelter…. i went inside and it dosen’t really go underground or anything… it’s like made of steel and concrete it seems. any1 familiar with this kind? anyhow we are probably going to have some tornadoes in the area tonight, and i was wondering how safe these "mound shelters" are, because i always here about being below ground to be safe from tornadoes. thank you all.
also, there is a layer of dirt over and around it… maybe 2 feet of dirt dunno if that helps.
and can it be sucked up into the tornado? i hear some people say that tornadoes suck up things like a vacuum and other people say it just blows wind i’m confused….

My one story apartment, i’m pretty sure would be history if a tornado were ever to hit it, considering it was once picked up and moved from a different location. So, I don’t plan on it sheltering me from a tornado, I would be a sitting duck in here. How would you suggest I protect myself? How could I know one is coming, what would the weather be like, is there always a tornado warning? Is it always very windy before a tornado, should I make way in my car? etc. Thanks.

I felt terrible that most of those people in Joplin, MO yesterday had no safe hole/shelter to get into.
I grew up on a farm in OK and my father dug a hole in the ground complete with a heavy steel lid on it. We had a small tornado pass right over us when I was 15 and I am so glad we had that hole. Tornado’s are very scary and families in tornado country need shelters in the yards.

I live in Oklahoma and there have been very severe storms which will produce tornadoes predicted tonight for my area. The house I live in doesn’t have a basement or tornado shelter and the bathroom downstairs has a window across the top of the shower. So I assume the safest place would be under the stairwell right? The stairwell is also right in the very middle of the house. How safe is it?

So there is ALOT of tornadoes recently and my house does not have a basement. So i was wondering if it was legal for me to dig a giant hole on my property.

There is no reason for a tornado to wipe out a town in an area where tornadoes are common occurrences. If you get a flood once every 50 years or a tornado once every 50 years why dont they build on stilts (in a flood plane) or bomb shelter style (for tornadoes) and let the kids have a bigger yard to play in?

We have a rather large basement. There are two small windows in the back, and below them are the dryer and washer. A little to the left and front of that is the water heater and the house heater. And to the left of that is a crawl space.
I know we should try to stay away from those windows, but the basement is a very open layout. So would it be best to seek shelter in the stair case? Exactly above that stair case is another stair case (we have a tri level house) so there isn’t anything heavy that might fall through the floor.
What do you think?

We are from up north and have moved to Dallas. We do not have a basement and only room that is kind of closed and away from the walls is the wine cellar that is also on the first floor. This has a open metal door with a small latch that is not very strong. Since the door is not strong does this really is the right place for use in case of a tornado?
Please post your suggestions? Any input is appreciated very much.

ok this question may be long and i don’t want any rude, dumb comments please. well i live in tornado alley (nebraska, south sioux city) and my 16 years of living here there hasn’t been a tornado that struck the town. ( not in my 16 yrs of living here, im not sure before that. ) and i thought that we didn’t live in tornado alley so i didn’t worry about tornado’s until we heard the sirens and a tornado struck in a little town not far from where we live and ever since then ive become traumatized and im afraid that every severe thunderstorm can mean that a tornado can form. ive asked people if they think a tornado can hit our town and one person said no because there hasn’t been a tornado, i want to believe that but i get an uneasy feeling that maybe one day it will be our turn and i don’t feel prepared. the second person said yes that a tornado can hit our town and that sooner or later it will but i don’t want to believe it. are there any states that are in tornado alley that have never been hit by tornado’s or that just because they live in tornado alley doesn’t mean they have to get hit by tornado’s? and what disturbs me also is that people aren’t scared if a tornado hit our town and also my parents are divorced so im always worried about my mom because she doesn’t know if theres a tornado warning ( she doesn’t watch the weather news and i tried making her but shes stubborn so i have to keep informed and i think her basement is not good shelter but she probably wont leave the house for another shelter ) if u can help with some of these questions i asked and maybe calm me down a bit because ive become such a worrywart ever since i experienced this :/ thanks

I can understand why people die in earthquakes, because they can’t predict when one is about to happen. But why do people die in tornadoes and hurricanes when there are warning systems and places that you can go to for shelter to keep safe? I understand not everyone has a safe place to hide but I’m sure a majority of people do? I’m very sad to hear of all these deaths from these tornadoes… it seems like it could be prevented so easily with adequate warning..

I have been having dreams about tornado’s a lot lately. Each dream is a little different than the last. In all the dreams I look up and see a tornado coming down from the sky. My instant reaction in the dream every time is to grab my to year old son and run for shelter. Where we go for shelter is different in each dream. We always stay safe though the tornado never destroys where we are. The twist on it all was in last nights dream, there was a tornado coming but I was the only one running for cover, my son wasn’t in the dream. What is going on here?

our laundry room is on the ground level, would that be a safe place to take shelter during a tornado ?
I do believe that it is centered.. since our building has 18 apts on 1st, 2nd, & 3rd floors… there is only one laundry room, that we 18 tenants share…our building is the center building with apts that joined on the left and right… it’s small, and there are no widows… so it would be ok to then?

Hi so as you all know, last night the southeast suffered some major tornadoes and i was really wanting to help. I live just south of atlanta so thank God it jumped right over us but me and my friends were planning on going out and helping on site. Should we just go and just find people and ask to help or go to a shelter or something? Or what are some other ideas on what we can do?

We have a ditch by a county road and our driveway was brought in with a culvert under it, gravel on top built up..would it be safe to hide in there during a tornado or could the driveway collapse on top of us? Trying to figure out what to do in the last minute scenario as we live in a double wide, don’t have a basement, or any kind of storm shelter near by. We also have a lake across the road..is it true that tornadoes die by the lake? Thanks!

The tornadoes that hit Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee yesterday probably killed over 200 people.
Most of those people probably didn’t have access to a secure, hurricane-resistant basement area. Research shows that when people can shelter in a basement, their survival rate is extremely high.
I live near Houston, and even though the swampy environment makes basements more difficult, I DO have one. And this isn’t even the heart of "tornado alley."
I don’t understand why it is legal to build residential or business structures in America without basements. We should know better by now.
Is it time to update the construction codes in states like Alabama? Or should we wait until another 200 people die in tornadoes?

We are in a brick house & I’m trying to figure out which is safer for us to do since there is no storm shelter near by. We are supposed to be getting severe storms soon (all night & tomorrow too) with tornadoes likely. Is it safer for us to be in the hallway (long "L shaped" hall, about 3ft wide with the back door on one end & us at the opposite end, it has 2 bedrooms on each side plus a bathroom) OR there is a small closet at the end of that same hall way (it has a couple of shelves & it is empty but there is just enough room for my 2 small daughters & I to fit (one is 5yrs old almost & the other is 16months) that closet is at the end of the L hall (the back door is on the opposite end) it has another bedroom closet behind it and a bedroom on each side & of course the hall in front (so that would make it a center room even thought its not the center of the house right?) Would we be safer in that closet with pillows over our heads or safer just in the hall if a tornado were to hit? I’m sorry if that was confusing, I was trying to be detailed lol. Thanks! (note: I don’t plan on staying in there all night, we are either gonna camp out in the hall or in the bedroom that’s closest to the closet & if a warning were to come either put my girls in the closet, grab some pillows/blankets off the bed & jump in there with them or just get in the hall with the pillows & blankets.)
the closet is about 3ft wide & 1 or 2ft deep
To be honest I don’t trust our bathroom. To make a long story short, we actually live in a trailer house but just bought this brick house that needs some work before we move in. The bathroom floor needs replaced. It’s ok to go in there if you need to use the toilet but I wouldn’t want to be in there during a tornado lol. The rest of the house is fine, we just can’t move in yet bc we have to install our whole entire kitchen (cabinets & all) & put in flooring (not subflooring, thats just the bathroom, but actual flooring lol). We just camped out over here @ the brick house bc I know it is way safer than a trailer house…
