Tornado Shelters
We have an in-ground tornado shelter in our back yard. currently there is a flower garden over the top of it. I was thinking about expanding the flower garden and turning it into a vegetable garden. Should this be a problem?

All systems should be go for that idea as long as the soil is good and you give the plants the fertilizer and keep the bed properly watered and weeded. The fact flowers have grown there before makes me feel you should have good results by planting at the proper time. Remember some plants like peas like being planted early and some can actually have a couple of plantings. If this is your first vegetable garden be sure to plant radishes they grow very well and let you see Progress

No the roots will not even come close to the shelter. If flowers were not a problem then vegetables will also not be a problem.

It shouldn’t be a problem as long as there is enough soil and the shelter doesn’t collapse.

Your storm shelter should be at least 4 feet below the surface. Therefore, there is no reason that you should encounter any problems from roots. I see no reason that what you have planned would be a problem.
Good luck and enjoy!

Go for it. Even the most energetic tomato won’t send roots much below 40 inches……you gotta have good soil for that! If in doubt about excess water (assuming you need to irrigate), go with a drop or ooze hose system, not excess flooding. Of course no trees on top!
