Tornado Shelters
I entertained a couple (from texas) in my Minnesota home recently and they were in awe of my two story home and basement, they thought the upstairs level was an attic and my finished basement a cellar!, ‘i’t's hard to believe in the tornado capital of the world texas home’s are devoid of basements (shelter)?, Is this true????

This is actually true,in many areas of the great state of texas.Due to sea levels …it is not possible in far west northwest texas it may be possible, many areas allow for storm cellers..so yes your friends are actually correct.

All the new houses built in Texas do not have basements. A friend of mine has lived in Texas for the past 26 years and has yet to see tornado or hail damage. When I was buying my house, the realtor said that most tornadoes seem to cut through uninhabited areas, but I don’t think this a scientific fact.

Semantics, In Texas, Basement and cellar are two words that are interchangeable. It isn’t as common as you might think.

Texas is not far enough above sea level to have basements

I live on the gulf coast, and a basement is not possible here, unless you want it filled with water !

Most homes in Texas don’t have a basement because the soil is too soft but the whole upstairs being an attic makes no sense because we have multi-story homes here!
