Are hurricanes and cyclones the same thing?
This question is an extension of a question I asked a few days ago.

I was on youtube, and watched a few videos of the cyclone i Myammar. One of the videos showed the route of the cyclone coming from the water. So is hurricanes and cyclone two different words for the same weather phenomena?
If yes, are different words used becuase they happened in different parts of the world &/or becuase the people that live in the region give the weather phenomena that specific name?
Again, this question is a extension of the one listed above, and the one above was asked cause me and my dad got in a argument or misunderstanding about if cyclones and tornadoes are the samething or different things.

A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rain. A tropical cyclone feeds on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapour contained in the moist air. They are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor’easters, European windstorms, and polar lows, leading to their classification as "warm core" storm systems.
A hurricane is a powerful, rotating storm that forms over warm oceans near the Equator. Another name for a hurricane is a tropical cyclone. Hurricanes have strong, rotating winds (at least 74 miles per hour or 119 kilometers per hour), a huge amount of rain, low air pressure, thunder and lightning. The cyclonic winds of a hurricane rotate in a counterclockwise direction around a central, calm eye.
If this type of storm forms in the western Pacific Ocean, it is called a typhoon.

Yes, they are.
I was wondering about this too, and like you said, it’s just because they take place in different parts of the world. Cyclone is the name given to this sort of weather phenomena in the East of the world, Hurricanes in the west. I don’t know whether it’s because the people living in that region named them though.

The same way we call "earthquakes" in here, GROUNDSHAKE,
we don’t call it earthquake, because it is not the entire Earth shaking.
