Topic: Natural Disasters

Directions:

Read the following paragraph and write a composition as stated in about 300 words. Your composition will be graded according to clarity, accuracy and meaningfulness.

A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g. flood, drought, tornado, volcano eruption, earthquake, typhoon, tsunami, or landslide) that affects the environment, and brings financial, environmental and human losses. We can see many natural disasters occurring at home and abroad recently, huge damage have been made either to the environment or to our human lives. Those natural disasters urge us to reconsider our beliefs and behavior toward our mother nature when we seek for clothes, food, and sheltering etc.

Therefore, what is your attitude toward the natural disasters? What shall we do to prevent us from being simply destroyed? What kind of role did we play in the causes of those dreadful disasters? Your writing ought to contain three parts, your viewpoint, the supporting ideas, and the conclusion.

I NEED AN ESSAY,NOT OPINION OR SOMETHING LIKE INTRUDOCTION. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? THANKS!

My mother is always harping on about me going outside, because it’s such a nice day. However, I figure that if it’s not a nice day, she’ll have to let me stay inside and play video games. In fact, any sort of bad wheather would do. Frankly, I wouldn’t be sorry if I made a hurricane or a tornado or a flash flood.

Our local elementary school opens its doors in the event of a tornado warning. However, being in an electric wheelchair I can not partake of this luxury. But I got to wondering, what if a child was attending this particular grade school? The so called tornado shelter has many steps of which even a child with problems of walking would struggle with let alone a child in an electric wheelchair. Where can I find help with this?

At least twice a week for about a year now there have been tornadoes in my dreams. I live in wisconsin so we do occasionally get tornadoes but they don’t really scare me to the point of worrying about them. It’s never the same dream or the same looking tornado. In most of my tornado dreams my goal is either to get everyone inside and safe or to run. Occasionally the tornado is just there, my dream last night had to do with a neighborhood I once lived in and finding old coins down by the river, but out of no where 3 tornadoes dropped from the sky and I hid in a car, the tornadoes caused no damage and had just momentarily picked up the car and spun it and dropped it on its side, I climbed out and continued to look for the coins. They don’t ever scare me and I don’t remember being afraid that they would kill me, I don’t understand why they are in my dreams so much. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out what my dreams mean but i can’t figure this one out. Any ideas?

I live in Florida and we are supposed to be getting ready for a bad hurricane season. We usually get everything we need, but are on a tight budget this year. I’m sure we will manage to get whatever we need, little by little, but it got me to thinking……What about the people who just don’t have the money? Have you ever seen the supply list?
Are all of you ready if a hurricane or any other major storm hits your area?

My husband is fascinated with storms and tornadoes and we just recently moved to "Tornado Alley" so can anyone suggest a good book full of quality storm and tornado photography? I looked at a book by Prof. Bluestein called Tornado Alley but it was too technical, geared toward folks with meteorology degrees….

I want a big book with lots of full-color photographs. This would be the perfect gift for him. Thanks for your help!
By the way, if you also have a good video compilation or documentary to suggest for the amateur, please do! Tnx.

Yesterday, I found some green and white poop and pee on my kitchen floor. An answerer suggested that it may be a snake. I was hoping it’d come out while I was home so that I could save the little guy from my cats.

Well, unfortunately, he/she came out while I was at work and I came home to a tornado of things flown all around the floor. I then found pieces of the body.

What was this? A garter snake? I’m guessing this is part of the body/tail.

Yeah Susan. I really didn’t want my cats to find it because I knew it’d die a torturous death but it didn’t come out. And I still can’t find the rest of the body and I hope they didn’t stash it somewhere and it ends up stinking. But yeah…
Good point Quixotic. I did notice the break was rather clean and I didn’t see cat teeth imprints. I was also wondering where they would keep the body because when they kill something, they usually leave it in the middle of the floor for me to see.

I really hope he/she got back outside however it got inside. I’ll look for a skink. I googled and skinks are in my area. Thanks everyone!

Ignorance, the World Ends

She sleeps
Awaken by the subtle breeze of the salt wind
It blows her hair in perfect harmony with the atmosphere around her
Sand in between her toes
She laughs
She closes her eyes and is comforted by the warm sheet that is the wind
She smells the ocean
All is calm

A blink of her eye
And it’s catastrophic
Meteoroids
Tornadoes and hurricanes
Destroying our home, the planet earth
Screaming for their life, people running in hope to find shelter
Disaster and death everywhere
Total ignorance in what is happening around her

She opens her eyes again
Bliss
She’s at the beach, safe
She murmurs “If I die now, I wouldn’t care; I’m exactly where I want to be.”
She lies down on the warm sand
Feeling every grain caress her body
Tranquility
The end of the world

I live in Abilene Texas and was wondering if a tornado has ever hit Abilene or the area surrounding it. I had wondered about this for a few years, ever since i saw a funnel cloud very low to the ground near my church. My cousin has seen one almost touch down in the baseball park near his house, go back up and come back down over his neighbors roof but go back up again before touching. I think it was from the same storm that produced the funnel cloud i saw. It has been a few years so i can’t really remember but i know they were both in the same summer, i think it was during that bad tornado outbreak a few years back. I am just curious if anyone knows i can’t really find anything on the internet about it.

Those Born 1930-1979
READ TO THE BOTTOM FOR QUOTE OF THE MONTH BY JAY LENO. IF YOU DON’T READ ANYTHING ELSE—VERY WELL STATED

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930′s, 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and 70′s!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren’t overweight because,
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

We played…tag your it, Indians & Cowboys. The Indians always lost the battle. Snow ball fights….who could hit a moving car with a snow ball and run like heck without being caught.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We didn’t rush to the emergency room for a scrap on the knee, or bashing our heads into something that got in the way.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendos,
X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVDs, no surround-sound or CDs, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms……..
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

Kind of makes you want to run through the
house with scissors, doesn’t it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:
"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

the other night, i had a dream that i was in some sort of rain forest with a group of lost people. i told them we needed to get to shelter and to follow me. i lead them through the forest and past a shack that was falling apart. i told them to continue with me, as some of them wanted to stay, and all of themhad their doubts. i then lead them to the ocean. the waves were fairly calm, especially for all the wind and rain. we walked along the ocean, the water at first, only half way to the knee, then there were water tornadoes everywhere (or as i have just read, they’re called water-sprouts). they were towering around us moving, agitating the people, dancing almost (i can recall 5 of them). as the people screamed and ducked down into the now hip high water, i urged them on. then, there was a shelter just off the shore, made of concrete bricks. it was partly underground. i lead them, and their doubt, inside and we waited safely in the bathroom of the building until the storm ceased.

I started out weighing 180lbs. I now weigh between 162 and 165 lbs (water weight I guess). I still need to lose 20lbs to be within my weight regulations for the military (I’m Army National Guard).
It’s been difficult to exercise these past 2 weeks because first i had finals one week then we were experiencing tornado weather. Unfortunately thunderstorms are still in the forecast for the rest of the week. So I can’t run like I usually do. I hate not working out for so long because its so hard to get back into it once i hop off the wagon!
Anyhow, lets get to the point. I need a better diet plan. My diet consists mostly of vegetarian options. I’m a pescatarian but try to eat fish as little as possible. My friend suggested low carb high protein but thats gonna be hard considering i eat mostly carbs (veggies, brown rice, tons of beans, fruit etc)
Any pescetarians out there that lost weight and how did you do it?
I already dont eat refined carbs. Only whole grains and brown rice. I drink 2% milk when i can’t have soy and DO fall victim to sugar (chocolate).
I try to stay away from high fat things, i hate fried foods and usually grill or bake everything. Is stir fry bad? I usually make vegetable stir frys with olive oil.
let me know if you need more info.
Thanks

I’ve recently had a dispute with a a friend on price gouging during and after a natural disaster. He said it was immoral and unethical thing to do. People don’t need price’s going up after a disaster strikes. But I had a different view on price gouging after a storm. Living in south florida it’s very common to gouge prices after a storm.
Well after one of the hurricanes that hit south fl i went out to buy gas and go figure by the time I finished waiting the line all the gas was gone. WHO’S fault was this? Well it wasn’t my fault that I got there late. I think it was the people in front of me who decided to put a full tank of gas instead of a qrt or at least half a tank to leave some for the rest of the people behind but then I started thinking why would they if it cost the same as it did before the storm. Awe maybe if they would have raised the gas from 2.89 to 5.00 a gal people would have not put a hole tank of gas and therefore leaving gas for all those in the back of the line. Same thing with the ice and people selling it on the streets. This guy was selling bags of ice for like 5 bucks someone called the cops and they came and arrested him made a big deal gave the ice away for free and there was no ice once again left for me. So my conclusion is that price gougers are not immoral but smart people sent by God to help get supplies around. Whats gonna stop you from buying more than you need? I doubt anyone in this selfish world thinks of the guy behind him in line.

What you guys think? I’m full of it or do I make a some sense?
question. If u do regulate how much someone gets. what if the family splits up and each buys the limit or if that someone goes to the iceman buys ice and then goes to the next iceman and buys more ice supplies still run out. Point is people will find a way around that limit rule. But there is no way around paying more. YES I kno people don’t gouge prices for the sake of others but it works you get supplies and the iceman makes some extra money. Both sides win. And usually the cops would confiscate everything and no one gets supplies :( . But I guess that made the situation better because it was the "christian way" btw you could blame that guy for calling the cops
I don’t think you guys understand. IT SUCKS WHEN SUPPLIES THAT YOU NEED OUR OUT OF STOCK! it will happen before and after a disaster. I live in south Florida and I have been in a disaster .many hurricanes down here. And nothing is worse that not having gas to power up your generator to keep your food good. I can’t even imagine people who were without light for 3 weeks (true story, happened to me). especially people who have some sort of medical machine to help them get by the day ..but because gas ran out they couldn’t power up their generator. and sometimes there wouldn’t be gas for days because people are selfish and stock up for themselves. And when prices go up everyone complains. In my opinion the selfish one’s are the ones who won’t pay more to keep supplies stocked up.
What do you guys care if someone makes money???! Its not about that its the cold hard fact that it WORKS!

i’m curious- compared to today’s living standard (in terms of houses), those people probably had no kind of shelter, so i wonder how they dealt with the twisters back then, say in the middle of the 19th century?
????? blame president Bush for the tornadoes that took place in the 19th century? what are you talking about, sir?

i remember as a kid…….the biggest and baddest thunderstorms happened when it was 90+ degrees F outside……..and then it got a bit cooler (like 75ish) and then the huge storm came.

but lately all these severe storms and tornadoes are happening when the temperature is only in the 50′s and 60′s. how could a storm have so much power in it when the temperature isnt all that warm?
