Is it safe to seek shelter in the basement of a 13 story hospital during a tornado? My other option is to remain home. I have no windows in my bathroom, but live on a hill with plenty of trees surrounding my property. I have a one story, brick, simple home.

I’ve been watching many videos lately of the Yazoo City EF-4, and I kept noticing that despite the tornado’s strength, many homes in the densely-wooded areas outside of town remained very much intact, despite the fact that they took a direct hit. Can such a large plane of trees, say, "restrict" airflow from a tornado and disrupt circulation at the ground level, thereby decreasing the force of winds that impact the home shrouded in the woods?

We live right in the middle of tornado alley, and one has never hit, yet. Our house don’t have a basement or bathtub, just a shower stall in the bathroom, not glass shower though.
I drew a floor plan, since I was going to work out a safety drill with my children, so they know.

By our floor plan, where do you think would be the safest place to be in our house? Or is it unsafe? Thanks for your input.
By the way we don’t live in the country, in a residential neighborhood.

Dear Mr. Contruction Manager,

I asked you for a copy of the appraisal back in May and you NEVER answered my email. If you would have answered my email back in May, I wouldn’t have asked Mr. Michael Anthony of the title agency, and Mr. Anthony wouldn’t have told me that you did owe me a copy of the appraisal, and I wouldn’t have had to ask you again. So thank you for being prompt and professional by answering my email 2 months after I originally asked you.

It looks like (yet again) that we are back at square one. Suntrust Mortgage has created yet another big problem for us. We are requesting the 15.15 (which is the remaining portion of the ,000.00) to pay the contractor’s bills for work/s they have completed and to also obtain their releases to obtain the “CO” from Hillsborough County. Be aware that I do not have the exact amounts for the contractor’s bills. If you want that information, please call Mr. Chris Braglin from Braglin Builders INC. at 813-695-0685. Again, I do not know the exact amounts for the contractor’s bills, so don’t ask me because you already have my answer.

These are the contactor’s that I am aware of that need payment:

1) Sal Electric: Electrical contractor that has performed the electrical work for our house.

2) A/C Contractor: A/C contractor that has performed the A/C work for our house.

3) Euro-Shutters: Hurricane shutter contractor that has performed the work for our house.

4) TECO: Local electrical power supply company. A certain amount must be paid before they do the final connection/meter installation to the house.

5) Hillsborough County Government: They require a certain amount of money to be paid for “Impact Fees” and/or etc… before they provide and/or release the “CO”.

6) Landscaping: Hillsborough County Government requires a certain amount of trees, grass, driveway and/or etc… before they provide and or release the “CO”.

7) Others: If any you can obtain those from builder.

Before we started the process/hassle to request the ,000.00, we had an ending balance of ,766.03 (according to Ms. Irene Hooper office meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 11:00AM EST) bringing our total to ,766.03. Your company led us to believe that we were going to receive the ,000.00 that we had requested, and maintain the balance of ,773.03. If you, or someone else in your company, would have followed their legal obligation of informing us that we would only receive ,584.85 (0.506%), and you and your company would be holding the remaining ,415.15 (0.493%), we would have most definitely went another route. I don’t understand how you and your company, fully knowing that we were approximately ,000 short of finishing the construction of our home, let us apply for the ,000 we need to finish our house, only to give us half and leave us in the exact same position (if not worse) then we were in before we applied for the increase. We feel that your company intentionally tricked us. We do not like this situation at all and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end favorable. Like we have said before, and like we are saying again now, we do not have the money to pay out and wait for you and your company to reimburse us.

On top of those fiascos, you and your company want inspection after inspection after inspection after each “penny” draw for 0 a pop! We already don’t have the money to pay the electricians, the euro-shutter guys, the a/c guys, TECO, Hillsborough County, and all the landscaping things the county requires to obtain the “CO”, and you and your company wants to make the situation worse by charging us 0 for each “penny” draw? All of these inconveniences are going to cause my builder to pass the extension date of August 1st and then we will have to pay you and your company another 0 to receive another extension. Like you and your company aren’t making enough money off the interest we are paying on the mortgage! You and your company LOANED us the money for the house and most of these delays/problems we have been having were cause by you and your company changing our contract managers every couple of months. It’s become pretty clear that you and your company orchestrated these events to keep on ******* us.

We aren’t going to suggest anything. Tell us what you and your company is going to do (or not do) to solve this mess, since no matter what we try to do to get things going and get our house finished, you and your company finds another way to **** us. Like the interest we pay isn’t a ******* enough in itself…

Pissed Off,

Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous
i don’t the money for a lawyer btw

I am 22 years old and I am terrified of thunderstorms, I haven’t ever been in any tornadoes yet and I hope that I wont be but anyways whenever there is a thunderstorm or even just in the summer time when it rains outside I always run to the tv to check the weather if it says that there is a severe thunderstorm warning or watch I freak out, I get so nervous and scared for some reason I get really shakey and stuff. There has only been like one time when we had a tornadoe warning and I panicked so bad I didnt know what to do I felt like my world was going to come crashing down on me or something, luckly it was just a bad thunderstorm and not a tornadoe. But can someone please give me some advice on how I can get rid of this fear its terrible when I see or hear that there is a storm coming I dont even wanna go anywhere because I am so afraid that its going to turn into a toenadoe and that I will not be able to get to shelter in time, or what if I dont have a basement or anything to go to what am I supposed to do?? If there is someone that has this same fear or knows someone that does can you give me some advice on how to get over this fear once and for all

We live in southern Louisiana, but want to move somewhere else. Sick of the hurricanes, too many mosquitoes, not much of a winter, and too much humidity/heat. We have 6 outdoor cats that I’m hoping my parents will decide to take with us, but it’s not looking good for some of them cause they’re so comfortable roaming around here, I hardly ever see them except for when they come home to eat.
We also have a few small pets that aren’t a concern but our 5 giant dogs are. We’ve been living on 5 acres out in the country for the whole 19 years of my life, so the same amount of land, or more, is highly preferred. The dogs are used to 2 fenced in acres so I’d never settle for anything less than 3. Weather is a high priority, that’s one of the main reasons for leaving. My father has a very bad phobia over bad weather, and it’s getting much worse each year. So somewhere with alot of storms/tornadoes is definitly out. I know, looking for paradise right? I mean somewhere like Kansas would be out cause isn’t it tornado-alley? And with the present state of the economy, I have no clue where would be ok to move to. My mother needs to move somewhere that’s easy to actually find a good job, right now she works as a teller in Regions bank and would like to stay in the banking business.
I have no clue where to even begin trying to find out about any of this stuff, we don’t have the money to just drive around looking all over the country! How do you find out about the economy, weather, jobs, ect. How do people know where to move to?!
Anyway, any links, info, suggestions, advice is greatly appreciated.

How do you think Montana would be? I don’t know anything about it, but it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go.

how strong a tornado has to be to become a tropical named storm and start deep convection? when does it get an eye? how deep is the mesocyclon?

when it gets to water, it becomes a water sprout, but when they start to issue hurricane warnings, how string has the water sprout to be to develop an eye and become a named storm

conversely, what processes cause hurricane to degenerate into simple single mesocyclonic tornado when they touch land

do hurricanes retain their names once they become a simple tornado and become extratropical

Do you think it is possible that this tornado could have been an f-6(using the old fujita scale), due to the fact that back then not only was the fujita scale not invented yet, but also there were no radars, and forecasting back then was very primitive?

I am looking for a state where it is not too hot in the summer, and not too cold in the winter. Doesn’t snow in the winter and in the summer ppl don’t get sunburn’t. A state where I can go outside anytime of the year in short sleeve shirts. I don’t want to goto california, because of high earthquake rate. Basically the state should have the most refreshing climate and the style of living should be good too. Don’t care about cost of housing. Just the quality of life. And it should be safe too from natural disasters like hurricanes or tornados.

I’ve lived through both. California native and also lived 6 years in OKC, before moving back home to California. We lived there during the May 3rd tornado that took out Norman, OK. I’ll take earthquakes any ol’day over a tornado. What’s your preference?
Vot-we have earthquakes often here in California, very, very rarely do they cause damage, just a rumble and shake. I guess Californians are used to them. But you see a tornado hit your house, it’s gone.

How good are livestock at predicting bad weather?

I mean, it was pouring rain earlier, and my horses didn’t give a crock. Now, it’s not raining, but we have a tornado watch for my county, and those surrounding…

When my horses were put away to eat (My dad did the chores today, but I usually take care of feeding and everything), they were really upset, and were running around. I could hear my neighbor’s cattle going crazy as I walked my dog. They can be loud on occasion, but it didn’t sound like their normal mooing. They sounded upset.
The horses kept it up for a while, so I went down there to look around, in case they could hear some wild dogs, or something. Nothing. They calmed down, and I stayed there for a little bit, petting them. I can’t see that they’re running around anymore.

Do you think that they sense something coming?

And if it switches to Warning, what should I do with them? Right now, they’re in their pasture that goes up against the barn, where there’s a run in attached to the barn, so they have that shelter. And, it’s kind of down in it’s own little valley…

Makes me want to move back to Arizona. Never had to deal with tornadoes. Or rain.
I’m in Kentucky, which isn’t in Tornado Valley, but a tornado did hit my town before years ago… And a couple of tornados have touched down in Kentucky since I’ve moved here a year ago. Nothing too major, though.

The cynical part of me says that they’re overdue.

My yard is large, 25 acres and fenced, so I could let them loose into my yard, do you think that would be big enough?

But the good news is, the whole storm looks like it’s moving off, though it looks like it’s going to skim southern Indiana.

Sorry, Meagan. Didn’t mean to give you my storm. :/
No, wait. The map says it’s moving east and a bit north. Even though the counties east of me have lost their warnings…?

I’m confused now.
Well, they canceled the tornado watch.

Still stupid flood advisories, though.

Now, I know a lot of you are concerned about the Mississippi tornadoes and all.

But how about we did a test here on R&S?

What if we were to get as many R&S ladies to post nudies of themselves for us?
How do we KNOW that Seattle won’t be blown away tomorrow in a massive twister afterward?
