in light of the recent tornados in atlanta, ive always wondered if a tornado could knock over a sky scraper. obviously, it didn't in atlanta, but it was only an F2 tornado. what about an F5? anyone? anyone? Bueller?

i live in an apartment, w/o basments. its a complex, not an apartment building, i know you are supposed to go to an interior room or bathtub, well this is where my problem starts.
i live under an apartment upstairs thats modeled exactly like mine, which means the bath tub is directly above mine in the same place, is it likely that the upstairs bathtub will fall down on us? & if it does would be survive it?

I can't get enough of storm chaser videos! There have been some great ones on youtube recently – any other good places to look? Do you like to watch them too?

I'm a self-taught atmospheric science student currently studying severe weather. I can not figure out how to distinguish a "hook" or "hook echo" on doppler radar images. I keep looking at images that are supposed to be perfect examples of this, and I just don't see it! Please help, and thanks in advance!

USAA Property Insurance will not pay enough for me to rebuild my home that was destroyed on 1 March 07 from the tornado!

I just got out of my tornado shelter. And I was thinking that I need to paint it and add carpet and such. What colors or ideas would be good? Something calming. Thanks!

I run a daycare, so I am here with 7 kids all day. Where can I go in my home to keep these kids safe if we do have a tornado here. We do not have a storm shelter, and live on a very flat area, with no big ditches or anything. Please help!!
Can we go in the bathroom to be safer?

E.g., big discount for homes like these: see http://360.yahoo.com/ki_te_moana (in hurricane areas also). Would not this mitigate costs of disaster relief and save lives? Lower insurance costs?

I am a storm chaser doing a research project on media coverage and severe weather coverage of the Oklahoma Tornado of May 3rd, 1999. I have found most of the videos I need, however, I am in need of coverage from Gary England and KWTV in Oklahoma City. The longer the video, the better. Thanks for your help.

And where I might find them?

Today is May 11th and it's the anniversary of an F5 that hit Lubbock, TX in 1970, and a last week an F5 hit Greensburg, KS. In the coverage I saw about the Greensburg tornado they said that only two F5 tornados have ever hit the US, then showed footage of "the other one" that hit in the mid-1990's. So by my count that's at least three. How many others have hit in the US? I know they're supposed to be pretty rare, but I would have thought the Galveston tornado in the '20's (?) would have qualified as an F5 too.
Anyway, if you know, I'd appreciate it.

I thought that we would do some tornado safety training in the family considering that the season is right around the corner.

When I was a kid, they always said to open at least one window if you were sure that you would have the time before getting to an interior room. I don't see that anywhere nowadays. Does anyone know if that is sound advise or has it been shown to be a bad idea?

I am told so many times to hold my tongue when trying to convince designers and builders that improving their building frames would stop a tornado in destroying their product.

They all say not to worry, because we are all insured against disasters.
thanks for the sympathy, morgan, and knightrider; if you had a new method for buildings to resist wind and seismic forces, which didn't change the design of the building, just the frame, was easier and less expensive to assemble/install, and proved to upgrade the frames to be more resistant than the forces, what would you do?

I want to bury a cargo container to be used as a tornado shelter. I live in tornado alley, and it would be cheaper and provide more room than a conventional shelter. I don't want to bury it and then find out that it will not with stand the load of dirt on the sides and top. thanks

Just wondering if insurance companies would insure tornado chasers’ cars or if they thought it would be too risky.

Where should someone go who lives on a third floor apartment and is unable to get to the first floor during a tornado? There is no hallway (it is outdoors), and no shelters nearby. Is it safe to stay in the apartment, or would it be better to go into someone elses apartment on a lower floor?

There's this awesome mobile home for sale, and I really want it because then I'll finally have a room of my own….and my mother keeps telling me we can't get it because if there's ever a really big storm or tronado, the mobile home will be destroyed first or that the tornado will lift it up and take it away. Is that possible? (Oh, also, we live in midwest with no possobilty of hurricanes)

I'm considering moving from Southern California to Fort Worth, Texas and I'm concerned about Tornados. I have a cat and will be most likely moving into an apartment because of costs. Do all apartment complexes have a group underground shelter for when they have tornado warnings?
Regarding being a Californian, I'm aware of earthquakes as an issue but once you even FEEL are usually years apart. I've lived here for 10 years and I've only really felt anything more than 3 times. Meanwhile, I here tornados are a high-risk "only-a-matter-of-time" there. So, in my own book, tornados are a LOT more dangerous.

Is Tornado IDS the best strike fighter than F-35. I think the F-35 has no chance because it is not a low bomber.
